Welcome to day 4 of Disney World Training. You can catch up on the previous training posts here.
Today we are going to continue the discussion of where to stay at Disney World. Be sure to read Day 3′s post here that talks about the advantages to staying on site. Be sure to read the comments because readers left their opinions of various resorts.
For this discussion, I am going to use my dates: May 22nd – June 2nd. Prices of hotel rooms at Disney vary by the season.
The cost of a hotel room with no discount is referred to as rack rate. That will be what I refer to throught this discussion. You can see the resort prices here.
Now, the biggest factor in deciding where you want to stay is how much you are willing to spend. Disney breaks their resorts into 3 categories: Value, Moderate and Deluxe.
Value Resorts
The Value Resorts are the 4 cheapest hotels at Disney. You have All Star Movies, All Star Sports, All Star Music and Pop Century (where I stay).
The cost of a value room for my dates is $105 during the week and $120 on the weekend.
Moderate Resorts
The moderate resorts are Carribean Beach, Coronado Sprints, Port Orleans French Quarter and Riverside, Fort Wilderness Campground and Fort Wilderness Cabins.
The resort rooms are about $170-$175 during the week and $190-$195 on the weekend. The cabin is $325-$340 a night.
Deluxe Resorts
The deluxe resorts are Animal Kingdom Lodge, Beach Club Resort, Boardwalk Inn, Contemporary, Grand Floridian, Polynesian, Wilderness Lodge and Yacht Club Resort.
The rooms average $390 during the week and $410 on the weekend or more! There are many different levels of rooms. There is one room that is $3005 a night (and it is not in the Cinderella caste)!
Now with that said, the hotels always have a special. The current special is 30% off Value (makes it $84 a night), 35% off Moderate (makes it $113 a night) and 40% off Moderate (makes it $240 a night).
Now besides costs, you have to consider some facts.
Room Size
The rooms at a Value are going to be smaller. A room at Pop is just 260 square feet, where a room at the Grand Floridian is 403 square feet. How important is elbow room to you?
Resort Size
The more rooms a resort has, the more people it has, the longer you might have to wait for Disney transportation, their food court, etc etc. Keep in mind that Disney does have more buses for the larger resort. Pop has 2,880 rooms but they have a lot of buses. The longest I waited on a bus was 10 minutes and often we would pass a bus going to Pop on the way to our destination. So it isn’t like they only have one Magic Kingdom bus.
Transportation
Do you plan to use Disney transportation? A lot of resorts have other transportation options than just a bus. The Grand Floridian, The Contemporary and The Polynesian are all on the Monorail Loop. This means that you can directly board the Monorail train from your resort. You can then take the monorail directly to the Magic Kingdom or to Epcot (you will have to change monorail trains to do this).
Other resorts offer other means. Wilderness Lodge and the Wilderness campgrounds have boats that take you to the Magic Kingdom.
Disney’s Beach Club, Boardwalk Inn and Disney’s Swan and Dolphin are all within walking distance of Epcot (or by short boat ride) and actually have their own entrance to Epcot called The International Gateway. They also have boat rides to Hollywood studios.
Pop Century is the only resort that never shares a bus. All other resorts either share a bus with other resorts or have multiple internal stops within the resort. Now that doesn’t mean that every single bus is shared, it just happens often.
Restaurant offers
Are you looking to stay at a resort that has it’s own sit down restaurant? The values only have food courts (which I enjoyed) but do not offer any sit down restaurants (such as O’hanas at The Polynesian). If that is important to you, then that is something to consider when choosing your resort.Values also do not have room service (but do have pizza delivery).
Refrigerator
The values charge you $10 a day (or it might of gone up to $12) to rent a little dorm sized fridge. It is free in Moderate and Deluxe resorts. That is a cost to factor in when choosing between the Values and the Moderates. (I suggest just either bringing/buying your own mini fridge or getting a big cooler and filling it with ice and keeping it in the bathroom.)
Pools
All resorts have pools, but they do vary considerably. Value resorts pools are nice, but they do not have water slides. You will only find water slides in the Moderate or Deluxe resorts.
Internet
Internet is $10 per 24 hours in all resorts.
There is just so much to consider when choosing your resort. I suggest you start here on AllEars.net. They have fact sheets on all the resorts as well as picture tours and reviews. Then you can go here on the DisBoards and click on the link for the thread that discusses your resort. There you will find a huge group of people that have stayed at that resort and you can ask specific questions about it.

Thanks for these Disney World Training posts. What many people don’t realize is that planning a Disney vacation is exhausting (and confusing at times) work. Your posts are concise & easy to comprehend. And the comments left by others (especially on the Day 3 post) are so helpful. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! It is so so so overwhelming planning a Disney trip. I should have my PHD in Disney planning. Nah, there are so many people out there that know so much more than I do. But I’m learning. :)
Just to let you know . . . Disney will not let 5 people in a room in many of the resorts. Most of the deluxe resorts can accommodate 5 in a room. We get deals to stay at the Beach Club because we have three children and it becomes a better deal than booking two rooms at the other resorts. Of course, we only get to go when we can get really good deals like free dining and off times.
Regarding the number of persons in a room, there is one area of one moderate that can accomodate 5: the Alligator Bayou of Port Orleans Riverside. These rooms have trundle beds for a small person (probably best for a child). You MUST request this when making your reservation, and there are, of course, no guarantees on availabilty. http://www.affordingthemouse.com
What is the policy on bringing your own mini frig? How would you get it to your room? Does Disney have luggage carts for carrying large items? We usually bring our cooler on trips and I had been considering purchasing a mini frig.
Thanks
Penny – check on disboards.com for fridge swaps – I’ve signed up for one and have friends that tell me that theywork great – they are free, and its basiclly a fridge/coffee pot that gets passed on from one traveler to another …
I’ve done a fridge-swap and it worked GREAT, of course, I was the first one so I had an advantage.
So you can take a cooler into the resort? They don’t say anything to you? I would love to take our cooler in and keep drinks and juices in it so we don’t have to spend so much on drinks.
I agree with the poster above that commented on them not allowing more than the max. in a room. We have a family of 5 and have stayed at ALK, WL and SS. The last trip we wanted to book a room at the Poly and bring along my mother. My youngest still slept with us so technically we would all fit but they absolutely would not allow it. We ended up at a 2 bedroom villa at Saratoga and fell IN LOVE and are not DVC members thanks to that stay :) Which may be an entirely other option or perhaps a post in the future you could possible consider writing about! Right now, points are cheaper than ever!!
Kari – where did you find the points to rent for DVC?
We stayed at the Hilton at Downtown Disney. It has shuttle service and magic hours and mini fridges in the rooms. Awesome pools, too. We did the Great Getaway package for (prepaid) $119/night (August 5-9th) that came with free breakfast buffet for 2. We could walk over to Downtown Disney and that was great since we arrived at about 6pm in the evening – too late to pay for a full ticket to the parks but were still able to satisfy some of the Disney cravings walking around the shops there…
Any suggestions on where to stay with a family of 6? I have 4 children ranging in the ages of 9-3?
When we stayed at the French Quarter at the end of September of this year our room did not have a refrigerator in it. Is that something that they have just started to do by taking out the refrigerator.
so sorry for the post we did have a refrigerator in our room it was that we did not have a microwave in there and in the past they had microwaves in the rooms does anyone know the reason
Ok, so I have another question about where to stay! We cannot decide between Animal Kingdom Lodge, Wilderness Lodge or Beach Club Resort….HELP! We have 3 young kids (4,3,and 15months) We want the “wow” factor and want the kids to have a magical time….we are just concerned about distance with AKL, and also food choices…..so, which resort has the best wow factor, is in the best shape, and would offer the most for our family?! Thanks!!!
whats the differnce in the Standard and preferred prices! what do you suggest we wanna go dureing the daytona race 2011!
Just a suggestion for people who are active duty or retired military. Shades of Green is wonderful, My family has 2 retired miitary (father and uncle) and they and there spouses can each book 3 rooms, so all the kids and grandkids plus aunts and uncles go together every year. The rate is based on ranking so the lower the rank the lower the room cost. It also has a px with disney souvenirs that are cheaper than at the park. It is right next to the Polynesian.
We also have a family of 6, kids ages 12, 10, 9 & 1 and was hoping to stay in one of the Disney Park hotels, which have a suite/room to accommodate this? Where do I find the sale for the hotel you mentioned, or if they are having one? Do they include this in a flight/hotel package? We’ll be coming from Canada and are looking for the best rates on the vacation package. Any sites you recommend?
I can’t say enough good things about staying onsite. (especially after having a bad experience offsite) The extra special, magic service at Disney is worth every penny!
Please help! We have a vacation planned to Disney World (orlando) for feb 29 to mar 3. I am now realizing this is peak/regular but was the only time we could go. I have a total of 5 people going, 3 adults, 2 children (2 and 4). We were planning on getting two rooms (one 2 bedroom and one 1 bedroom). We are paying for the two bedroom and were looking for a room with a kitchen so we can cook meals for the kids as they can be picky and hoped it could save on dinner expenses. I was only hoping to spend $300/night but can’t find anything for that price in an on site 2 bedroom with kitchen. What the heck? I had wanted to stay on site because of transporation/ambiance but am not sure if I’m missing something. I know the off site marriott has that type of room for around that price but was hoping anyone knew of any deals and where to get them. Thanks. Need help ASAP!
Brandi-
With a party of that size the Port Orleans- Riverside rooms with the extra trundle bed would be the best deal for you and with the money you save not booking a second room you can add the meal plan so you wont need a kitchen. We went last year and with my Mother in law and all 5 stayed in one room by putting the toddler on the trundle bed.
Also if you look right now you can get the free dinning plan with the moderate hotels during some of the dates. My family of four is going for 8 days and staying at Port Orleans with park tix and free dinning plan was only $1900! Biggest suggestion- Wait and watch the sales. The same trip would have cost my family $2800 not on sale! Good luck!
Brandy….. you need a travel specialist. They will help you figure out the logistics for your trip, will help you navigate the enormous amount of information, and will help you search for specific discounts that will work for your dates. Make sure you choose a company who doesn’t have hidden fees and has earned the Ear Marked Authorized Disney Vacation Planner designation. If you are dealing with a reputable agency, their services will be completely free to you and you’ll have the most stress free vacation you’ve ever had. I have good friends at many agencies who, like me, want to make sure Disney is a happy memory for your family. Good luck!
