My name is Suzie and I blog over at Kiddo Savings. I am a mommy to three amazing little kiddos! I have been married to my best friend for almost 8 years now. We also have 2 furry kids and at any given time a foster dog or two! Im a SAHM that loves to save money!
After my daughter was born I looked into making her baby foods. When she was around 4 months old I started making and freezing various veggies and fruits for her!! I started simple with the yellow veggies, I had given these to my older two as first foods and they did great! I was so surprised at how simple making the foods were and also how much money I was savings!! And whats better than giving baby fresh veggies!!
Here is my first recipe for baby food I made my daughter, and to this day is her favorite veggie!!
Butternut Squash : a light tan color, elongated pear or bell-shaped. A deep orange flesh, loaded with a sweet, nutty flavor.

Preheat Oven to 400 Degrees
- Cut butternut squash in half, scoop out seeds
Here is my first recipe for baby food I made my daughter, and to this day is her favorite veggie!!
- Place halves face down in a pan and cover with an inch of water
- Bake in a 400 degree oven for 40 minutes to 1 hour – be sure the “shell/skin” puckers and halves feel soft then scoop squash “meat” out of the shell
- Place squash “meat” into your choice of appliance for pureeing and begin pureeing.
- Add FRESH breast milk or water as necessary to achieve a smooth, thin consistency.
- Puree
- Place in ice-cube trays.
- Freeze! Once Frozen place in plastic freezer storage bag.
TIPS:
– Takes alot more liquid then you think to thin out enough for stage one first foods. I started off using breast milk, but found plain old water was easier. They say babies under 6 months should not have juice, but if you want you can use juice to thin.
– I did NOT use organic butternut squash for two reasons. I could not find it and two you do NOT use the outside skin so baby doesn’t get any part that could have been contaminated by pesticides. But again its your preference! I got mine at the local farmers market. To me the fresher the better.
– I found these cool freezer bags by Ziploc. They come with a battery operated sucker thing. It cost about $8 at walmart and you can buy as many bags as you want. This way I can open and grab some out, suck the air back out, and cut down on the freezer “ice crystals”…
**NOTE** I did 2 fairly good size squash and I got 5 ice cube trays full! Also I paid .84 cents per pound, figure I made that much food for under $4!!

Each baby is different and will respond differently to foods! I just want to shar my adventures with you and how they worked for our family.

I’ve made baby food for all 3 of my kids (9, 6 and just turned 1). It is an amazing money saver, so easy and so much healthier! Great tips! Thanks
That is great. I wish I’d done this with my kids. Everyone says that kids are expensive, but it doesn’t have to be that way. While I never made my own baby food, I did use cloth diapers some of the time and it saved me big time. I’d recommend this to any mom…especially a stay at home mom.
