This is a guest post by my friend Linds…. I loved her idea of getting rid of every penny she gets while saving the silver for her Disney fund. If you have a creative way you are saving towards Disney, make sure you email it to me.
Some people like to take their pennies in and cash them to help fund their Disney trip. I’m trying something different.
I use cash for our weekly grocery budget, and I don’t like to get pennies as change- so I usually use 1-4 pennies during my transaction to get back other coins like nickels, dimes and quarters. These will help fund our Disney trip faster. My total the other day was $x.88, so I used 3 pennies and got back $.15!
Disney is not in our budget right now no matter how badly we want to go- remodeling our house needs to happen sooner as our boys are getting older and our house seems to be getting smaller.
But at least we can work toward this trip, even if it’s just a little bit at a time. I don’t think I’ll have to worry about running out of pennies- we have saved them over the last 9 years! I really want to see if we can finally make them all go away.
Linds is a Disney fanatic which started from a young age with her first Disneyland trip at 4 years old- now married and has 4 boys, she enjoys going even more! Linds blogs at Enchanting Deals about the latest Disney specials and park, dining and resort guest tips. She loves being a Disney deal expert- to help families get to Disney and save money! Hey Kristen,
My husband and I actually LOVE having pennies in our fund. Just because we are less likely to dip into our savings box. We’ve been taking our folding money and turning it into jingling money. (As my 3 year old says.) Every week we dump it and count it! It keeps us excited about our trip!!! Hope this helps!
I’d focus on the trip and delay the remodel, before you can blink your kids are grown and I speak from experience!!
I have been saving all of my change since my son was a baby, he’s now 7! I have enough to take him, but I want to go ALL OUT! He loves animals so when we go on this once in a lifetime trip, I want to stay at Animal Kingdom so he can wake up to the animals. We’re almost there but not quite. Maybe next year!
I do this very thing. The only thing I do different, is that any remaining pennies I have I dump into a seperate change jar for only pennies.
The jar holds $10 so when it’s full, I cash in, and get “jingling money” (love that!) and put it in my Disney Fund.
Another thing I do, is I put money from any bottle returns I make in my Disney Fund as well.
I do this too!
We went to Disney twice last year, so all our change is going to be saved for a beach vacation this summer!
I like to keep the pennies! I just ran across this blog yesterday and so far I fell in love! My son (9 years old) and I realized that everyone hates pennies! So we decided to collect as many pennies as we can. My son started asking everyone he knew (mostly family) for their pennies, if they didn’t want them of course. Our goal was to save 1 million pennies and go on vacation. I realized this would take forever! But so far we are up to about 5000 pennies. It’s only about $50 bucks, but he picks up every penny he sees on the ground and he has fun doing it! We are going to take our pennies down to our bank that has a coin machine (no fee) and deposit them into the bank. We can get interest on them =)
Our fund is the Dream Fund. Though I do spend most of the pennies in my wallet, we seems to collect them. Sometimes our kid adds the pennies she finds out and about to it. Since she’s young and they are the easiest for her to recognize, I’m fine with collecting them. Plus she proudly helps me redeem the rolls at the bank.
I’m like you, I don’t really like the pennies…. they just seem like a hassle…. so I always carry them with me and use them to get nickels dimes and quarters for change…. then those go into “the fund”…. I hate it when I pull out my change purse for the cashier and the people behind me SIGH!!!! Like the extra 10 seconds that I’m taking up is their personal torture…..
This is such an interesting idea–you end up saving more without really trying. And when you look at your change jar at the end of the month/year, it will be worth more than it looks since there aren’t any pennies in it. This is a small thing but very cute.
I had always saved my change for 6 mos to a year and used them for redecorating a room, or toward the purchase of something fun for the entire family etc… it had never occurred to me that I could use my spare change and other ‘found’ money to save towards a family vacation until I found this site. Now I am super excited!!
