Getting Started Couponing: Using Giant Eagle to Save

in Getting Started Couponing

This is a guest post written by my reader Laura who shops at Giant Eagle on a regular basis.

Giant Eagle has a fabulous gas and food program that feed back and forth. We find their gas program to be much better than any of the other 5 grocery stores in our area.

For every $50.00 you spend, you are awarded with $.10 off per gallon. They frequently run promotions where it doubles to $.20 or offer more points for gift cards (and they do carry Disney Gift Cards). For example, in March you could get an extra $.15 per gallon when you spent $20 on frozen foods. The GetGo, the gas station affiliated with Giant Eagle, also has deals where if you purchase certain products you can get bonus fuelperks.

For every ten gallons of gas you pump, you receive 1% off your grocery order up to 20%. You can save up these foodperks to use on a big grocery order. We save ours four or five times a year (we have one Hummer and one older car and I commute often) and do a giant trip to make the most of our savings. Also, they calculate your fuelperks based on your grocery total BEFORE the used fuelperks savings (the 20%) so my grocery order was actually calculated near $300 and therefore I earned $.60 fuelperks that day even though I payed around $220 for my groceries. Great, huh?

I recently did a stockpile grocery trip there where the total was well over $400. I saved $45 with coupons and e-offers and received 20% of my order off and used $80 in gift cards, bringing my total down to just over $200.

I know this is kind of confusing but once you get started it’s easy and Giant Eagle associates have been really friendly. In fact, a teenage associate pointed out to me last week that they offer a 2 for 1 Sunday paper pack just for Couponers.

Once you set up an online account you can add ecoupons (which can be combined with manufacturers coupons- which they double up to $.99, by the way) to your card and see where you’re at with both programs, as well as look at the circular and make a shopping list!

(Thanks Laura!)

I shop at Giant Eagle all the time (LOVE the fuel perks/gas perks program), but I have never received a 2 for 1 newspaper. I usually buy 3 of them every Saturday but haven’t seen a discount. Is there a coupon that I need to bring? Thanks :)

Thanks for writing this. I shop at Giant Eagle all of the time. What’s the 2 for 1 Sunday paper pack for couponers? I’m interested in this since I normally pick up 4 papers from there (which counts towards your fuelperks) on Sunday.

I am looking for someone who does weekly deals at Giant Eagle. Do you have a site that you do that on Laura? Thanks!

I also shop at Giant Eagle and take advantage of both Food Perks and Fuel Perks. It is my absolute favorite way to save….especially when I can leave my daughter at the Eagles Nest while I shop. As far as their scanners being off, I do watch that, too, but they will give you an item for FREE if it rings incorrectly. I have received several free items, including a large bottle of laundry soap, simply because they forgot to take down the sale signs. And they are generally very appreciative when you find a mistake. Take your receipt to customer service. They will fix it for you and give you your refund.

In response to questions:

Ask the cashiers if they have a “sunday paper pack” I live within range of the Washington Post and that’s what I pick up. It’s usually in a white rack at the front of the store and quantities are limited, so get there early. In my area, it’s $2 for that pack of two.

I use Deal Seeking Mom for Giant Eagle deals. Get on their email list and they send it out regularly! Giant Eagle deals ads go from Thursday rather than Sunday.

Make sure you register your card and sign up for e-offers. It’s always exciting to see that extra change come off at checkout.

The Giant Eagle return policy is also great. I wanted to return a razor a week ago but I lost the receipt. The associate actually looked up my shopping history and gave me the $10.59 back a gift card. It was a razor that I bought without looking and someone had actually stolen the razor from the package. I regularly send in comments to them because their team is great and super helpful! It took her ten minutes, but they did it! Every few weeks they have a good stock up deal on toilet paper or paper towels where you save, can use coupons, and get money off your next order.

i was buying floss and had a $1 off ucpoon it was 97 cents. I was told they don’t take ucpoons over what the prod is worth. that if they did and just gave me 97 cents it would be fraud on there part because they would get $1.

One more thing. Sorry Kristina to hear that some of your items don’t ring correctly. I shop there often and I have a few cashiers who I know are friendly and helpful with my coupons and large orders, so maybe you will have luck meeting a few that remember you and are willing to help. I usually have my boyfriend unload the cart while I watch prices to try to catch any errors but I’ve never actually had an error. However, like someone mentioned above, you should be getting it for free if they are making a mistake. Hopefully that’s something they are working on!
