This is a guest post by my reader Laura who earned $230 by Mystery Shopping in February!
I’ve been a mystery shopper for several months now and wanted to share a few tips about how to add extra money to your “fund” or to your income! Mystery shopping is a great way to earn gift cards to places you visit often, enjoy reimbursed meals, and receive payment for eating out or visiting a store! Over the month of February, I earned $70 in gift cards to my regular grocery store, $40 to a chain restaurant, and $120 in cash! It’s really nice to have extra money rolling in once you get started!
My favorite tips:
1) Join multiple mystery shopping companies, maybe with an email address dedicated just to mystery shopping. You are likely to get several emails a day of available assignments. There are probably going to be some companies that don’t pay enough, don’t have assignments near you, or book up so quickly with people who have been in the system longer than you that you might never work for them. These are my two suggestions: visit http://mspa.jobslinger.com/exec/sfs/jobboard to see what jobs are available in your area, join up with those companies if you’re interested. Also check out http://www.volition.com/mysteryUSA1.html for a list of mystery shopping companies. You also might want to google to see if particular shoppers have had issues getting paid by particular companies. Most do paypal or direct deposit. (Sometimes you might be asked for your SSN. Verify it’s a legit company first). That’s in case you make more than $600 in a year, in which case you’ll need to report for taxes.
2) You’ll make the most money rolling together assignments. I did six assignments on President’s day. They only paid about $10-15 each, but combined, that was a lot of money! It can be a little tedious so I like to space it out.
3) Follow the directions exactly- if you don’t get a receipt, bring a guest when you’re not supposed to, don’t wait the exact amount of time, or order another item, your shop will get rejected! Your first assignments are also really important. If you make a lot of mistakes, that company might not assign to you again.
4) Considering that most of you reading this are willing to work hard and already do surveys and other programs to earn extra cash, mystery shopping has a relatively high payout. On the low end you’ll make $5.00 plus reimbursement for a fast food shop, on the high end you could get family tickets to a major attraction reimbursed. Those big shops will fill up fast, so it might be to your advantage to take on a few smaller shops to have a good reputation in that company’s system, making them more likely to assign you bigger shops in time.
5) You can never reveal yourself as a mystery shopper or take notes while doing the shop. It helps to keep a notebook in your car for jotting down details as soon as you leave, especially if you do several in one day because it can get confusing to keep track! And always keep your receipts for a few months- I’ve been randomly asked to mail one in three weeks after I completed the shop.
Do you have a creative way to make money? If so, please email me!

I have been shopping for the past 4 years. I am not a hard core shopper by any means, but I do average $2500 paid and $2500 reimbursed per year. I get to go to hotels, amusement parks, restaurants, and shopping while getting paid. Yes, I do get paid plus reimbursed to shop hotels! The kicker is that when you shop, you are an independent contractor so you have to pay taxes on your income, BUT you also get to write off your mileage. We travel to our family’s cabin 2x/month and I make sure to get a shop up there everytime we go. Last year I wrote off over 5,000 miles! (When we go on family trips, out of the state, I always do shops as well.) I’d be happy to share companies I work for. If anyone is interested, you can email me at jalundgr@hotmail.com. Happy shopping!

Oh, I would love a list of companies that you have actually used! wvgirl1979@frontier.com
There are many legitimate companies and many that aren’t legit. If they are asking you to pay, then they are not legit. When you begin to sign up with the companies, set up a separate email address just for MS because you will get many emails. I am currently signed up with over 50 companies so that I can have a variety of options. I have done dining, clothes shopping, electronics shopping, gas stations, phone call shops (where I sat in my living room and did a recorded call), and grocery stores. Who doesn’t like free clothes and food!! You can work it as much or as little as you like. The best site to find legitimate companies is Volition. If you go to the forum section for MS, you can get a feel for the companies that are having a hard time and don’t pay on time. Those are few and the good ones outweigh the bad by a landslide! If you have questions that you think I can answer, my email is chrisaltm@gmail.com .
I would love more information. jreske@email.davenport.edu

I’m jumping on the interest bandwagon too. Please let me know the legit, paying companies. Could you possibly notate ones that you know ask for SSN. I guess I’d rather start with one that didn’t ask right off the bat (maybe only after, say, I’d hit that reportable threshold). happysaver (at) hotmail (dot) com

I had a really BAD experience with a “mystery shopper” job. I googled the company. Looked legit. Had a contact name and phone number, and physical address. Had a check that came Fed Ex to me, and it BOUNCED Big Time! My bank’s FRAUD Department requested copies of all my emails and details regarding my dealings with this company.
******Please be careful!
There are scammers out there that spoof legit mystery shopping companies. They send out checks and ask you to cash the check and send them back a portion of it as part of a “mystery shop”. Legit mystery shopping providers will NEVER ask you to send them money. You can learn more about mystery shopping and legit opportunities at the Mystery Shopping Providers Associations website: http://www.mysteryshop.org/index-na.php

There’s now an iPhone Application called Field Agent which uses the GPS on your phone to find offers available in your area. Some of them are simply “take a picture of the display and answer a few questions,” while others require you to purchase several items. I have not used it much yet, but it seems to do the same basic thing. :) Happy earnings!
Amandayounciak@gmail.com please email me the list!
I would love more information! Thanks so much!
txcountrygirl262002@yahoo.com
Would love the email list too… :)
Is it possible to still get some info regarding mystery shoppers?
Much thanks!
I love mystery shopping! I’ve personally gotten over 10 upscale restaurant meals paid for, plus several retail shops with either nice payments, or reimbursements for items purchased.
I know some people practically earn a living shopping, but I just love the perks!
Very interesting article. I have been thinking about doing this but weary about providing my info to just anybody.
