How to help tornado victims in Alabama via an online donation drive

in Posts

The Birmingham News/Carol Robinson

Yesterday morning my town was hit by a tornado. We suffered loss of homes, businesses, vehicles, etc. Praise the Lord we did not suffer many losses of life. Unfortunately, it wasn’t over. Later in the day, more tornadoes touched the ground in Alabama killing at least 194 people. This line of storms spanning 7 states took a total of 298 lives and more than 163 tornadoes reportedly ransacked the south.

Southerners are in dire need of some of the most basic necessities and I am working with my local church to start an online donation drive to help the victims of these storms. If you have any items that you would love to mail to us, we will gladly take them. Here are a few things that we are in need of:

toothpaste
toothbrushes
shampoo
conditioner
soap
deodorant
dishwashing soap
laundry detergent
hand sanitizer
clothing in all sizes
shoes in all sizes
blankets
small toys for displaced children
ziploc bags
bandaids and other first aid products
femine products
baby formula
diapers
baby food
toilet paper
Kleenex
food
individual juices
pet food and treats
etc

We will gladly take anything that you are willing to send.

You can mail your donations to my church. We will ensure they get into the right hands. You have my personal guarantee that all donations will be distributed:

Disaster Relief
c/o First Baptist Church of Moody
902 Church Street
Moody, AL 35004

If you would like to send a monetary donation, please memo your check as Disaster Relief.

Other places to donate:

You can send a monetary donation to:

Salvation Army Disaster Relief
PO Box 100339
Atlanta, GA 30384-0339

Red Cross is taking text donations. Just text text “REDCROSS” to 90999 to donate $10.

My friend Christie who works with the Birmingham News is maintaining a master list of all organizations here.

And above all, we request your prayers. God bless!

I will be putting together a package tonight. I have been watching the news all day and it breaks my heart. I was just talking about all the travel sized stuff I have that is just taking up space. I am glad to know it will be going to a good cause and getting used. Thank you for doing this.

Can I order items from Amazon.com (such as diapers) and just have them shipped directly to your church? I get free two-day-shipping with Amazon Mom so it would be there in just a few days.

Gosh Kristin…I have been so burdened today over the devastation in your neck of the woods and our family prayed for yours! I kept singing all night lastnight and all day today, “He’s got the whole world, in His hands!” I know it’s a kids’ song but HEY!!! He DOES!!

I will be putting together a post about this and linking to your posting here. The good thing about us “stockpilers” is that we always have PLENTY on hand and God has given the majority of us a giving heart and spirit.

I will be sending anything that I can to help. It would be super duper nice if the post offices would DISCOUNT shipping huh??? haha!

May God Bless you and yours :)

Thank you for letting us all know how to give. It is hard for me to give to random charities where I have no connection, but you make it so easy when we know that real people will be on the receiving end. Again, our prayers are with you all.

Also, this would be a good time to use some of the flat rate boxes from the USPS especially since things like canned goods and shampoo can be quite heavy. :)

I will put together 4 small boxes and I’m going to ship them through a “mystery shop” program at the USPS. You can register as a mystery shopper at Bare International (http://bareinternational.com/en, click in upper right corner). They will reimburse you for the shipping cost, up to a certain dollar amount, and pay you a fee of $10 or more to enter the simple shop on their website. You can use the fee to offset any extra cost of shipping a heavier package than the reimbursement allows. I found 4 post offices in my area of rural IL, so there should be locations nationwide that need to be “shopped” next week to help us all send more packages at little to no cost to us.

66 Kay S. April 29, 2011 at 1:18 pm

My husband is now taking a box to the post office. I just about cleared my “couponing” shelf of medical and beauty supplies. What a wonderful feeling to pay this forward. We have been able to donate about 80% of what we get by couponing and it is times like this that really makes the extra effort we put into couponing pay off. Thank you for ALL that you do and for posting this information. Please continue to keep us all updated on what is going on there. We are praying for you and the many many who are affected by this disaster. What you are doing makes a BIG difference for all of us! Thank you!!!!!!!

This is only my third week couponing, so I don’t have much of a stockpile yet, or much money to donate. But I am going to try and get all the free or cheap needed items I can! I will be sending a big box and some prayers your way! I’m also going to tell everyone on my Facebook about this post!

I sent a box out today that should be there Wednesday. It is coming by UPS. I enclosed dish soap, body wash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorants and lots of samples or travel size items. I also put a baby teething toy and some washclothes that we got from our baby shower. They have never been used but the packages would not fit in the box so I put them in a ziploc bag. Hope these Items help. Thanks for the notice about donations needed.

My daughter lives in Birmingham to go to college, and she told me that several of her softball teammates have lost pretty much everything. She is moving back here next week and has donated all of her extra stuff to her friends. She’ll be living at home for a while, so she gave them all her kitchen items, towels, etc.

Are you still taking items for donation? What is needed most?

The very heart of your writing while appearing agreeable at first, did not work properly with me after some time. Somewhere throughout the paragraphs you actually were able to make me a believer but just for a very short while. I however have a problem with your jumps in assumptions and one might do nicely to help fill in all those breaks. In the event you can accomplish that, I would undoubtedly end up being amazed.
