How to help tornado victims in Alabama via an online donation drive (update)

in Posts

This was a CVS Pharmacy. Photo credit WBRC Flickr

Update: I have had over 100 people who have committed to sending a box of items. I am so thankful to you all! Please continue to inform all your friends and family about this way to donate to the tornado victims!

Online: You can ship items directly to the church via Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc. A few people have ordered cases of diapers, wipes and even food. Anything that you want to send would be appreciated!

Share it: Please feel free to share this information via your blog, email, Facebook, Twitter, whatever. The more people that know of this option, the better!

Used items: We will gladly accept used clothing, shoes, and household items. Please use your own judgment on if they are in good shape or not.

Wednesday my town was hit by a tornado. We suffered loss of homes, businesses, vehicles, etc. Praise the Lord we did not suffer many losses of life. Unfortunately, it wasn’t over. Later in the day, more tornadoes touched the ground in Alabama killing at least 250 people. They are reporting that the tornadoes were EF3, EF4 and EF5s (which is the worst kind).

Southerners are in dire need of some of the most basic necessities and I am working with my local church to start an online donation drive to help the victims of these storms. If you have any items that you would love to mail to us, we will gladly take them. Here are a few things that we are in need of:

New items:

Can openers
dog collars and leashes
pet beds for the shelters
paper plates and plastic silverware

Previously listed items:

toothpaste
toothbrushes
shampoo
conditioner
soap
deodorant
dishwashing soap
laundry detergent
hand sanitizer
clothing in all sizes
shoes in all sizes
blankets
small toys for displaced children
ziploc bags
bandaids and other first aid products
femine products
baby formula
diapers
baby food
toilet paper
Kleenex
food
individual juices
pet food and treats
etc

We will gladly take anything that you are willing to send.

You can mail your donations to my church. We will ensure they get into the right hands. You have my personal guarantee that all donations will be distributed:

Disaster Relief
c/o First Baptist Church of Moody
902 Church Street
Moody, AL 35004

If you would like to send a monetary donation, please memo your check as Disaster Relief.

And above all, we request your prayers. God bless!

Please don’t forget about the elders and pets. They are often the most forgotten. They may need particular meds, food and clothing (i.e. Depends). I know that not all of us mayhave this stuff in our closet, but perhaps it is worth a trip to the store?

When using coupons or buy one, get one free-donate the free one. Also, I heard coupons would be appreciated in the areas where power has been lost and all food had to be thrown out. Refrigerators and Freezers have to be restocked. These are a couple of ways that you can donate without it costing anything. Another thing is diabetic supplies. If anyone has any diabetic testing equipment, that would be greatly appreciated. Also, wheelchairs, walkers and other medical equipment that perhaps you no longer need.

I would like to also add to your list. It will be a bit more, but they are also in need of chainsaws, gas, work gloves, machetes (sp???), rakes, face mask, vicks vapor rub (for under the nose….God bless them they are still finding the ones who did not make it), Someone with animal control abilities (they are having to kill some of the dogs…so incredibly sad…but dogs keep attacking because they are scared), garbage bags (very large lawn bags will do), People who can work manual labor are needed for about a 100 mile stretch between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham…entire towns have been demolished along this corridor. If anyone wants a peek at doomsday…this would be it. They are asking for your prayers if you can’t come. Please pray for the victims. If you have a weak stomach, please do not go to Tuscaloosa, but there are so many other towns that need your help as well. God bless you for your help…simply Thank YOU!

Hi, I was reading this and feel a need for my husband and I to help(we are in Florida). We have boxes here but I had a question about how to pack the boxes for donation…we have bought a bunch of granola bars and instant oatmeal for a great deal the past month or two. Can we take the packets and bars out of the boxes to fit more in the boxes instead of having to bulky granola and oatmeal boxes??? And are they able to heat things up like oatmeal and pasta and such??? And do you know of anyone doing a children’s drive (kind of like operation Christmas child with the shoeboxes???), obviously everyone affected needs help and we are sending regular boxes over there too but has anyone thought of doing things like that for the children over there too??? Thank you for posting these things to give people who aren’t able to drop boxes and help physically in Alabama information so we are able to help also. Thank you and we’re glad your family is safe

My SIL lives in Blountsville, AL and I live near in Ringgold, GA (also hit by an F4 tornado). Some of the things I’ve heard her say they need are baby wipes (for everyday washing since water service is non-existent). Also, some of the flavored packets for water and SUNSCREEN. Many are still w/o homes and are outside all day trying to salvage what they can from the rubble that used to be their homes.

From someone who has seen this damage and the hurt and disaster these storms have caused, I say thank you on behalf of those who are so generously helping those in my home state of Alabama. As you can guess, I am concentrating my help to my neighbors 7 miles to the north of my home.

I’ve got some boxes of toys I’m planning to donate somewhere, just hadn’t found a place yet. Toys aren’t necessities, but maybe some children would enjoy a doll or action figure in pretty good shape?

I am so glad you are giving us an outlet to help. (I have loved and used your site for the last couple of Disney trips.)

So far I have a 750 baby wipes the thick ones on the way from Amazon. I will keep shopping and see what else I can find. Thanks for doing this!

What kind of accessibility do the roads down there have?
I am thinking of collecting lots of items up here (PA), as well as donating all of the clothing, toys, & household items that I was going to sell at our yard sale. (I would much prefer they just go to people who need them)
Anyway, my husband was thinking of renting a uHaul and just bringing down a truck load, but I was wondering what kind of storage your church has?
I have been so heartbroken for your communities and want to help any way I can…

I love this idea. We were planning a garage sale but would much rather donate anything that can be used. We are up in Illinois… does anyone have any ideas on how we could get this stuff down there?

I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to teach my very curious 3-year-old daughter about children and families who don’t have the things we have sometimes after a disaster like this happens. I took the time to show her photos of a tornado as well as some of the aftermath photos to give her an imagine to put with my explanation. I then explained to her that we have lots of “stuff” we could give to those people to help them. She ever so willingly went to her toybox, dumped everything out and started choosing toys that other kids might like. Our prayers go out to all who have been affected by this harsch storm of mother nature. We will be sending a care package with miscellaneous items that we hope will help, even just a little.

I’m putting a box in the mail tomorrow with some baby items. Bottles, wipes, bibs, teethers, blankets (I’m sorry but, I could only afford 5 of each -maybe someone else will donate some other baby items too)and I also put about 25 stuffed animals in for the young children to hold on too. I also added a few diapers I had that left for newborns. These are not in a package but just placed in the box. May God be with you and all of the people affected by the storm.

My box went out today. It was filled with maxi pads, toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, shampoo, conditioner, baby lotion/wash/powder, deodorant, body wash/soap, razors. Almost my entire stockpile of travel sized items is in that box. I love to see these items going to use!

You have a box coming from CA stuffed with body wash, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, floss, deodorant, bar soap, disposable razors and pantyliners. I would have never thought of this but I am so glad to help. I found your post through Collin and I’m sure many of the things I packed in that box I got free either directly or indirectly because of you so it was the least I could do.

Hi Kristen,
My family does not have much to purchase new items for the disaster relief, but I do have tons of my three daughters clothes, waiting to be sold at our annual family garage sale. Some new with tags, most in excellent condition. When my husband gets paid, I will send most of them to your church. God Bless.

Hi Kristen,
I’m a college student, so money is always tight. I saved 40 dollars of my paycheck this month to be able to buy two 40lb bags of Pedigree dog food from Petco.com and I had free shipping (and I sent it directly to the church). I know it isn’t that much, but I hope it helps. God Bless.

I feel horrible looking through the pictures of what has happened to the people of Alabama and I have been thinking of ways and what to send. This post is great and very thoughtful. I just ordered a 12 count case of Libbys canned fruit, an 8 count case of 2 pack Gerber baby food and a 504 count case of Pampers thickcare baby wipes. I will be sending more as I can and posting this for my friends to see. I love the idea I can use my subscribe and save discount to save and get free 2 day shipping to help everyone in a quicky manner. I am going through my home to find clothing, pet items and anything that will help to send. Thanks for posting about this and how to use amazon to help, I would have never thought of it myself.
