Getting Started Couponing: What is the best time to shop?

in Getting Started Couponing

What is your favorite time of the day to shop?

My absolute favorite time is in the evenings when the teenagers are working or Saturday morning (like 7 or 8 am). I find I have less issues at the register when I shop during these times. I try to avoid the busy times of the day (especially around dinner time) if possible because I hate for someone to get stuck behind me in line while I use all my coupons.

If you are new to Couponing, you might want to take a moment to read more in my Getting Started Couponing series. It will teach you how to coupon like I do!

I usually shop early in the morning before it gets too busy. I hate crowds.

I like evenings after the kids are in bed. Sometimes its easier without the “help”. :-)

I think the worst time is the last evening before prices change for the new ad (Wed nights at my Publix) – everything is crazy because they are taking down old sale displays (that I’m still looking for!) and putting up new ones.

I’ve been dropping my daughter off at 6AM to pick Strawberries (summer job) and I plan my strategy for my shopping trip. Nice to be first in the stores, and getting first pick of all the items they put on clearance during the night. Checkout is less stressful cuz there’s not too many people there yet, except yesterday at K-Mart a lady was getting pissy about having to wait “so long” in line (she was asked to come to customer service counter to check out but she declined!) so I politely suggested she get up earlier and get there ahead of me next time….I made my own day!!

I prefer early mornings! I like to be home in the evenings with my family but will run a quick store run if nedded. However my big Once a Month Cooking shopping trip I prefer to do in the morning the day before my big cook day. I spend the week prior preparing for it.

If you shop in the evenings, the meat counter will discount any meat that needs to be sold in the next day or two. For our store, they do this around 8 p.m. I’ve found that if I take the already discounted meat up to the counter, a lot of times the meat manager will mark it down even more! For example, last night I got 13 pounds of turkey for $0.49/pound! As long as you freeze it right away, it’s perfectly fine! Also, the deli in my store will often mark down subs, fried chicken, chicken pot pies and other items that haven’t sold during the day. A friend got an entire 8-piece fried chicken for $0.39 last week!
