Grow Your Fund is a daily post that gives you a chance to win prizes by checking in on all the various challenges you are participating in. You can choose to participate in one, two or even all of the challenges giving you even more opportunities to Grow Your Fund!

The Challenges

No Dining Out: The concept is simple, lower your family’s dining out bill and add the money you save to your fund.

Minniemizing for the Mouse: Get in shape for your trip to Disney by walking at least 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week. The average person walks 8 or more miles a day at Disney World. Your feet will thank you!
Not going to Disney? Don’t worry. You can participate too. Just commit to working out at least 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week!

Budget Challenge: Can your family stay on budget this month for groceries, entertainment, dining, etc? Do you think you could even challenge yourself not to spend a dime 5 days this month? Be sure to report on your spending vs your budget every day. The goal is to be able to add the extra money saved at the end of the month to your fund!
*If you haven’t set a budget yet, you might want to check out this post.

Decluttering Challenge: Is your stuff starting to overtake your house? Do you feel like your kids room is full of too much junk and not enough fun? If so, I challenge you to find a new home for just 25 items a day for the next 30 days. This could be 25 articles of clothing, 25 books you no longer read, 25 toys your kids ignore. Have a box for items to donations, a box for items to sell and throw the rest away! At the end of the challenge, have a yard sale and add the earnings to your fund!

The prizes

At the end of each month, I will pick FOUR winners who will each receive $25 to add to their fund. Look for the winners to be announced on the 3rd of each month.

How to enter

Leave a comment with the title of the challenges it is for. You can participate in one, two, three or even all four challenges. There will be one winner per challenge, and winners can win multiple times! It’s all done by using Random.org, so if your number comes up and you are eligible, you win! In order to be eligible to win, you must actively participate in the challenge for at least FIVE calendar days.

There are lots of “extras” to be enjoyed at Walt Disney World. Some of them are hard ticket events requiring the purchase of a separate (and often expensive) ticket, some of them require that you attend a dinner show (also not cheap), but there are some that only require that you be in the park to enjoy them. These are, again in my opinion only, the three best “Free” extras available and they are so significant that many visitors plan their vacations to coincide with them.

  1. The Osborne Family Spectacle Of Dancing Lights - We saw this one for the first time in 2009 and it simply took our breath away. The word spectacle simply doesn’t do it justice. Millions and millions (literally) of lights all synchronized to Christmas music put on a spectacular show culminating with a snowfall. The only way to truly appreciate it is to be there to see it for yourself but the next best way is to check out these videos. The whole thing started when the neighbors of Arkansas businessman Jennings Osborne became a bit irritated as his Christmas display grew and grew causing major traffic and other issues in his neighborhood. The folks at Disney, never the ones to pass up an opportunity, asked him if they could move the display to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and the rest is history. This particular extra generally runs from about mid November through New Year’s Day.
  2. Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival - This one is huge and lots of folks visit in October and November just to be a part of this fun event. If you love good food with an international flair you might want to make plans to visit while it’s happening as we often do. There is so much going on you couldn’t hope to do it all but you can pick from lectures, seminars, samplings, or just strolling around the World Showcase sampling foods ($2-$7) from the 25+ booth located everywhere. The strolling and sampling is great for snackers and you can see some of the things available by clicking on this link. Don’t forget that there is also the Eat To The Beat Concert Series held nightly in the America Gardens Theater so you can enjoy some wonderful music while taking a break – by the way these concerts are FREE. Please be aware that many of the tastings, seminars, schools, etc. have fees attached and some of these fees are significant. But, if that’s the type of thing you enjoy the cost is worth it. The Food & Wine Festival happens in October and part of November each year.
  3. Epcot’s International Flower & Garden FestivalI must admit that we have never attended the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival and even this year we are visiting during the Food & Wine Festival. BUT – in the spring of 2013 we will definitely be going to see all the flowers and topiaries. It’s all about the flowers but there are also lots of other things to do. This year’s festival was deeply entwined with HGTV and there were a series of classes and lectures presented by that network’s stars but the real stars are the flowers and topiaries that dress up Epcot as far as the eye can see. In order to appreciate tha amazing transformation that Epcot undergoes each spring, take a look at this time lapse video. If you enjoy some of the older (perhaps “classic” is a better term) pop and rock music, do not miss the Flower Power Concert Series. This series also takes place in the America Gardens Theater and yes, it’s also FREE!! This festival generally runs in an April and part of May time frame but watch out for Easter because room rates can be out of sight and the crowds huge at that time of year.

I highly recommend any of these events to you. I’ve found through the years that when Disney puts in as much effort as they do with these particular events that they don’t leave room for disappointment.

You may want to consider scheduling your next trip during one of these events and see just what Disney is capable of. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Update: Well turns out they have changed the party this year. Go here to read about all the changes….

For those of you planning to attend this year’s Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, you are in for a treat or two!  If you are working on planning your party fun, be sure to check out this past post giving a variety of tips to make your party more magical.

But to be sure you get the most of all the party has to offer, be sure that you check out this freebie:  the face painting.  This service typically costs well over $10.  However when attending the party, you can get your face painted for FREE!  On our first trip to the Halloween Party, my son decided to get his face painted.  He loved having it done but the paint did itch his face.  At 3 years old, he did not understand that scratching it would mess up the makeup.  The next year, he decided to get painted again.  This time, he knew it would mess up if he touched the paint.  He was very careful with it.  In fact, he slept in the face paint and got it repainted the next day.  (The retouch did cost though, fyi!)

They will also paint your suggestions if you do not see one of the face paintings that meets your fancy.

If you get your face painted, we would love to see them!

(Thanks Meet the Magic!)

Canvas People
has their 8×10 Gallery Wrapped Canvases on sale for $14.95 shipped. The canvas comes ready to hang and is the perfect gift for someone special in your life. I ordered one over a year ago and I still love looking at it every day. It is very well made and well worth the $15 I paid.

It is a great way to turn your favorite Summer vacation photos turned in to beautiful photo canvases. It’s also great for back to school moments, gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, etc.
