In late September I received a phone call from Dave, who is a DEAR friend of Disney Dad’s and mine. Dave was calling with a Disney question. “We are thinking of taking the girls on a surprise trip to WDW from Santa. What do you think?”
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”, I screamed into the phone as if he was giving me news that they were moving away.
Let me be clear when I say that you’ve gotta be 34 flavors of CRAZY to go to Walt Disney World the week between Christmas and New Years or the fourth of July weekend. I mean, nuttier than the fruitcake you’re getting from Aunt Edna. Think of Walt Disney World during that week as a sequel to the most insane Black Friday experience you have ever had and multiply it by a thousand. If the picture above (notice the wreath on the lamp-post) doesn’t make it clear to you nothing I can say will.
And although our dear friend is normally a completely rational human being he’s decided to buck the Diva’s advice and make a go of it. I figure he will at least be able to do some reporting back to me about how bad the waits were and what times exactly they closed the gates to new people, so I’ve not kicked him out of my Disney lovin’ cult of friends, but I’m worried about the Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome effects when he returns.
I have tried to minimize the stress to his family by, once again, planning his trip. However, its hard because its basically going to be insanely crazy no matter what. You can see their planning spreadsheet by clicking HERE. But know that I was expressly told to keep it a bit loose as the other family going with them doesn’t have the desire to be driven like cattle from ride to ride the way I normally design my plans.
But I thought if you’ve decided to make a go of it I’d give you a few important tips.
1. ALWAYS BE THERE AT PARK OPENING. Fact: Once a park reaches its “capacity” for the day they “close” the park to any guests coming later. Yeah, so this means that parks are REACHING capacity and often mid-morning/early afternoon. Nobody knows what “capacity” actually is because Disney does not release it, but its rumored to be around 69,000 for Magic Kingdom. They’re opening parks at 8:00am Dec 26- Jan 1 this year (2011) and MK is open until 1am almost every night that week, so they’re obviously TRYING to accommodate the psycho amount of people, but… well… think sardines. The earlier you’re there the shorter the lines will be (although they’ll still be longer than what you’re use to).
2. ALWAYS HAVE A FAST PASS IN YOUR POSSESSION. As soon as you have a fast pass expire you need to go and get another one. You’ve got to be super smart about how you use your fast passes during this time because they are like GOLD. Again, don’t be a dummy and get a fast pass for one ride and go stand in an hour long line for another one. (example: Fast pass for Space Mountain then stand in line for Splash). Basically what this tip means is that as soon as that fast pass reads “you can get another one at x time” you make sure you’ve gone to get another one. This is especially important for Soarin’ and Toy Story Mania which get the most insane lines you can imagine.
3. GO TO THE RIDES YOU WANT TO DO MOST IN THE MORNING! Normally I don’t have you crossing parks EVER because it wastes valuable energy. However, when you’re doing WDW during THIS week you want to do the rides you want to do MOST FIRST THING and try to get them out of the way, because the lines and the fast pass returns will only lengthen. Have a plan, but realize that your plan may get killed depending on how many people are coming in the park that day.
4. TAKE A DEEP BREATH! Ready for the straight talk portion of this post? You are not entitled to act like a jerk to anybody else in the park just because you paid a lot of money to be there, even if it’s a “once in a lifetime trip”. It is not acceptable for you to yell at total strangers, jump over strollers or stop short with people on scooters and then have the nerve to yell at them. Shut it! Everybody’s semi-miserable. Just take a deep breath, realize you chose to come during this time and make do with what you’ve got.
5. LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS You need to seriously lower your expectations of how many attractions you will be able to get done from Dec 26-Jan 1. As in SERIOUSLY LOWER THEM!!! Most of you will have never dealt with crowds quite like this before, so you need to just realize that its not like any other trip you’ve done before (even if you’ve done WDW at other times of the year) and that you just need to have as much fun as you can during that time. Don’t miss out on the great stuff happening still OUTSIDE the parks, like the great gingerbread decorations at the Beach and Yacht Club. Take the evenings off if you need to, the parks are going to be nutso anyway. So just go with the flow and do your best to soak up the atmosphere and don’t be concerned with crossing things off to-do lists.
Ok, well there’s are my top five tips for surviving that week. I understand that because of vacation time for some of you this really is the “best” week you can go, but as you can see from the picture above, its also THOUSANDS of other people’s best time to go. So just do the best you can and remember that a BAD day at Disney is still better than a good day anywhere else.
Good luck!

I remember going to WDW(EPCOT) once when I was about 13 on New Years eve. WHAT A MADHOUSE!!! Wayyyyy too many people in way too small of space. I am now 37 and still remember how I felt like a herd of cattle. And it was cold ( we’re from Chicago so we know cold) we had on mulitple sweatshirts, we knew it would be chilly but silly us packed our winter coats in the top carrier when we got into Florida. We didn’t even make it to midnight, we decided to go back to the hotel and celebrate there.
In my opinion Disney has been extra crowded all year (we live here & visit often). I can not even imagine going during Christmas week, just because of the above average crowds even in the off times. Was thinking about heading over this weekend for one last hurrah before the holiday. Crazy? Maybe.
I agree with Laney! We have been going in Sept-Oct time frame for years with no crowds. This year we went in the middle of Sept and it was crazy busy.
We went last year the day after Christmas till Jan 2 and it was crazy! The parks on new years eve reached limit a half hour after opening. Jan 1 was awesome tho, i guess everyone left that day. We didn’t have to wait long for anything and the park was still decorated. If you can wait go AFTER new years eve.
Omg so agree with the girls above! We went the week after Thanksgiving (typically a dead week) and it was much busier than the same time 6 yrs ago! Darn free dining which they wouldn’t give us. Can’t even imagine how busy that week will be. Will let you know though as I’m sure my father-in-law will give us updates. He works at the TTC.
We were just there and it was crazy busy. The parade was being taped and Justine Bieber was there. It was hard to move. Not very enjoyable at all. At the time we went it was suppose to be at 25% capacity. If that was so, I have no desire to be there when it is crowded.
We were just there as well. We knew the “Beibs” was going to be at the MK for the parade taping, we chose to go to Epcot that day. Best thing we could have done! We stayed the following week and it was lovely. We waited 20 minutes at the most for anything! We go this week every year and couldn’t be happier.
Were you there the week prior to this?
I remember one year we went on Christmas day. My mom “it won’t be as busy because people are at home with their families on Christmas day”. And an hour into the madness…my mom “I think everyone brought their ENTIRE FAMILY TO DISNEY WORLD on Christmas day.” I was pretty young, but I still remember THAT insanity!
My first trip was 4th of July week/weekend…I had no idea about it being a bad time and am glad I didn’t because, honestly, I didn’t think it was bad that day…nothing like the photo you posted!
We went one year during Thanksgiving and that was hectic and when we went last year during December (not busy week) it was still a ton more crowded than I thought it would be, I can’t even imagine what it is like Christmas-New Year. The one thing I would add to this is that we found after an hour or so after we got one of our fastpasses last year (but before it was time for them to be used) we were able to get another set of fastpasses.
Slightly off subject, but I am surprising my husband with a trip to WDW and we leave January 11th. Can anyone tell me what to expect weather wise? I have looked at various websites and some say it’s the perfect temperature while others say it’s freezing. I just don’t know what to pack!
We have gone to Orlando in January a couple of times and the weather has been different each time. One year the kids were swimming outdoors and once we were bundled up in sweatshirts and pants. I would say pack a little of everything. We also went in June one year – definitely didn’t need long sleeves. January is a little less predictable. It seems like a lot packing for both warm weather and cold weather but unless you have the money to buy coats and jackets when you get there – it is worth it.
@ MIchelle, Try to watch accuweather.com. They give you 15 days of weather which is helpful in planning. We leave tomorrow for the Mouse and I will try not to stress after reading these posts :) It will be warmer than it is at home and I will be Pin trading in the Happiest place with my family.
Oh NO! lol I am from Alaska but my husband has been stationed in Georgia for 4.5 years. We have gone to WDW 6 times since living here…well, we are moving back to Alaska in February so I figured we would get one more trip in and make it extra special from Dec. 21st-31st! I’m panicking a little bit right now after reading this. lol
We are making our first Disney trip over Christmas day this year. I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures and report back on crowds. I will definitely be at the parks early but we will be there for 7 days and are only doing 2 or 3 park days. We will spend one day at LegoLand. We plan on being in Epcot on Christmas and I can’t wait to see holiday Illuminations. Thanks for the tips !
We did our honeymoon trip there (2002) during that time and I don’t remember it being that crowded. Maybe because we didn’t have kids with us it was easier to manage. We did all the big people rides that we wanted to do because we knew the next time we would be there we would have kids and have little chance. I remember at night it was really nice with not a lot of waiting for rides at all.
Last year we went during February vacation week and that was plenty of people for me ;) This year my mom now wants to take us which is great and the week after February vacation which is normally dead. I guess we will see now, sounds like some are saying its been busier this year. Even last year we had a wonderful time and hardly waited at all using fast pass. I was worried about the lines that week with a 3 & 4 yr old, which there were but we were smart about things i think ;)
I am going the 25th-jan 3. Kind of panicked looking at the that pic. We are only going to the parks 3 days. Enjoying resort decorations the other days. Planning on not riding that many rides on new years eve at magic kingdom. Staying on property that previous evening just in ensure entrance with emh.
April,
As I replied to Nassa, I am right there with you…that picture has me somewhat panicked! But, I am positive that we will all have a blast despite the crowds!
Ok, guys now you all have me worried. I am taking my kids to Disney World on the 23rd thru the 30th. I hope it want be as bad as you desribed. We have waited all year for this trip. We went in 2008 on Dec. 24, 25 & 26th and there was a good bit of people there, but I thought it wasn’t realy that bad, & the animal kingdom & the studios was pretty empty. At least it’s not supost to be to cold:), but there’s supost to be some rain:(
Nassa,
Don’t worry, I’m right there with you! We will be there from the 17th through the 1st…this picture and post have me a little panicked as well! If you see a lady with her parents, her husband and three kiddos (ages 5, 3, and 1) and she’s crying and pulling her hair out, it may be me ;) lol I’m sure it’ll be great – I’ve always wanted to go during Christmas!
I have to disagree with this post… I respect your opiNion but we have gone this same week and did not experience anything but a great family time! It was more crowded than our normal times (october is my fav) but we were able to go Romany park any day and were not there at opening.. Maybe it was a lucky year (2006) but we loved being able to experience the fun! I’ve been 4th of July week too and that was bad! Anyway.. Like I tell everyone, don’t go crazy, have fun and know you can always go back so font feel like you have to do everything at once!
A few years ago we scheduled a trip to Disneyworld for December 20th to December 28th. It was great until the 26th. We ended up leaving early because the crowds were just too much!
Last year we arrived on January 3rd. The Christmas decorations were still up and we were able to enjoy the Osborne Festival of Lights. The lines were short and we were able to make reservations for all of the restaurants we wanted to experience, including La Cellier.
I highly recommend waiting until after Christmas!
We were just there the week of December 2-9, 2011. The weather was unusually warm in the 80′s and the parks were crowded. On Saturday they had closed Magic Kingdom by noon. Lines were everywhere, including food and drinks and waiting to catch the tram. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party was also very very crowded. You would have thought it was the middle of the summer. Did not get to ride too many rides because of this.
oops we’re going to Disney the week of 4th of July…but we won’t be there on the weekend just the monday – friday of that week. If it gets too crowded we’ll just leave and do something else :) we’re all adults and flexible.
I have went over New Years the past two years. On New Years Eve (in Epcot), I had a Fastpass for Soarin and the Fastpass line was over an hour long, the stand by line was over three hours long.
You can have a good time, just know what you are getting yourself into. You really will not be doing many attractions, so plan on doing a lot of hanging out, and slow walking in a crowd.
The lines for food and drinks are very long, plan to wait at least a half hour (on New Year’s Eve). The lines for bathrooms are very long too. Epcot sets up portable bathrooms. Those will still have long lines. So, don’t wait for an emergency to use the bathroom. I had a child in diapers and just changed him in the grass (which is something I would never normally do).
The fireworks are amazing in Epcot. They announce the countries and the times that they clelebrated their new year and set fireworks off over that country. I also saw a trial of the New Years Magic Kingdom fireworks and those were great too, they had numbers in the sky counting down.
This year we are not going to go into a park on New Years Eve, our son is too old to stay in a stoller for hours at a time, and I do not think it is safe for him to walk. We are staying at a hotel with an Epcot view and will watch the fireworks form there.
