Sticker shock is when you stand in front of a product and stare at it with an open mouth and then walk away wondering how people that don’t coupon can afford to buy groceries. Every time I go to the store, I experience sticker shock.
Today, I experienced sticker shock when I went to add a gallon of milk to my purchase at Publix. We need milk. We have like half a cup of milk left in the jug. But I am not going to pay $3.99 for a gallon of generic milk. I’ll do without milk for a day or so until I make my run to Walmart.
It seriously makes me wonder how people that don’t coupon can afford to buy groceries every week. Every single time I go the store, products I buy on a regular basis have gone up in price. Here are a few prices that I recently saw that made me shake my head in disbelief:
- Generic loaf of bread — $1.39
- Generic Soda — $0.78 a 2 liter (I remember when it was $0.58)
- Generic Cream Cheese — $1.98 a block
- Generic Shredded Cheese — $2.28 a bag
- 5 pound bag of potatoes — $3.29
- 20 oz Coca-Cola — $1.79 at CVS
So thinking back, what is the last item in the grocery store that made you drop your jaw in sticker shock?
Bree says
2.99/lb of grapes
Lipton’s canister of tea was 7.99 at walmart. I buy them on sale for 3.99. Who pays that much for tea?
Robyn says
Just bought milk an hour ago at CVS in FL…$3.79 for a gallon.

My hubby’s favorite snack is raw nuts and I couldn’t believe the prices today. They’ve gone way up and the package sizes are down.
We drink 5-6 gallons of milk a week so that’s always always hard for me to see those prices. We do have a cost + 10 % store nearby that has pretty good staple prices. I make an extra trip each week to go there for milk, bread, eggs, cheese. I want them to stay in business!
Jean says
Salt for the water softener (potassium chloride! Used to be $7 per bag a few years back at Costco, then kept creeping up. Paid $19.99 last night at costco!
I buy almost all the groceries at Trader Joe’s and other staples at Costco (2# cheese for $5.19) and Walmart (usually don’t buy food at Walmart). I love TJ’s – spices are $1.99, marinara $1.79, bread did just go up to $2.29, eggs $1.49, cheap organic frozen veggies. Better prices, better produce, friendlier service than Vons (Safeway).
Laura says
Pecans $11 per pound! Walnuts $7 per pound!
I usually only buy these for baking from Thanksgiving to New Years but I don’t recall ever seeing walnuts over $4 or pecans over $5 before.
Seems like most store brand prices lately are only running 5-10% less than name brands instead of the 30-50% cheaper that they used to be.
One exception (from your list) generic cream cheese blocks are only $1.00 at kroger while Philly cream cheese has gotten outrageous and never goes on $1 sale anymore.
boomer3145 says
Between the price of gas, lack of coupons & good sales the prices are terrible. Pasta, rice, ramen noodles, jelly, anything to bake with, shampoo….I find myself shaking my head & swearing at the food. We cut out the extra papers-my stock pile has dwindled The Mexican store are cheaper. I freaked over soap-8 bars of Dove for $10.29. Going back to the old ways – we cook & bake from scratch, frozen OJ, no boxed food, no chips, junk…… Tea bags killed me this week. $3.59 for 20 of green tea. Walmart is the worse.
Wendy says
I’m not going to complain about our $2.50 on sale at Kroger milk after reading all your posts. But meat is outrageous. We are eating more and more vegetarian meals.
sandra says
I had won a coupon for free butter. I searched and searched the store for the specific brand, looking in all of the ordinary places. I finally found it in the deli section and it was $5.99 for 1/2 lb. Couldn’t believe that there were actually people who could and would pay that much!
Kelli says
I agree with most of the other posters – milk, eggs, bread, peanut butter, etc – the essentials have all gone UP UP UP.
For most of our produce & a lot of our meat we’ve been buying things at our local ethnic, non-chain stores (Mexican, Asian, Indian, etc). Sometimes they’ll have great sales on other items that make the trip totally worth it… but I cringe when I forget something for a dinner and have to pop into our Vons to grab a lime or a bunch of cilantro and it’s 3x what I would have paid at the other stores!
James says
made a late night trip to wm to get some things to finish making a dish for my wife’s work tomorrow, 4# onions $2.98, $0.69 for 3#@ aldi’s, what a bunch of rip off artists.
Marcie says
Cheese is way high!
Milk has been creeping up a little here, but not too bad. Last time I bought it at Smith’s (Kroger) it was $2.59 a gallon. I live in Utah and have the .75/1 printable that resets once a month, but I only have 1 computer.
I am shocked that last year, my stock up price on shampoo was .25 a bottle and now the best I can get it is .99.
I am lucky about bread here. We have a local bakery that has fresh baked .99 bread mondays. They are not seconds, or day old either. They have both white and wheat bread. It is way yummy and denser and more tasty than the lowest priced store brand bread. I go and buy my 5 – 6 loaves for the week. If there is a week that I forget to go, I can always pull out my wheat grinder, grind my own wheat, and make my own bread.
Beth says
Butter. I cannot get it for under $3.99 a pound it seems. Milk is pretty expensive, but I have never had to buy it before. I never drank milk and I grew up on a Dairy Farm and got it for free. I think it’s $3.39 here for Store Brand.
Meat also got really bad around here, but it seems to have gone down quite a bit.
Delina says
Mine was Hamburger- $15.00 for 4 pounds!!! and that was on sale!! just blew me away!!!!!
Everytime I run to the store it seems everything has raised 10- 20 cents and what gets me is that the sales ads are not really sales anymore!! It is really hard to try and budget when you spend half of it on one or two items!!
Lori says
Wow I had to laugh at myself when I read this post. I just stopped by Albertson’s today here in Billings, MT. I shuddered picking up Milk at $3.89 a gallon. Orange Juice “on sale” for $3.99. Eggs were $2.29 for a dozen.
But I balanced that out by basically turning the finish coupon into a moneymaker. I found the 20 ct. Powerball Finish on clearance for $2.54. They were also part of a Spend $30 get $10 OYNO deal. I used the $2.15/1 to bring them down to $.39 each. Added some other items that were okay deals to bring me to the $30 before coupon. Then got a $10 catalina that I used on ground beef that was on sale for $2.99 lb to bring 10 lbs down to $1.99 lb.
jennifer says
organic grass fed milk is $3.69 a half gallon.
Eggs from happy chickens are $4.50 a dozen.
Chicken thighs went from $6.00 a pound to $7.50 a pound so I switched to whole chickens.
I’m not willing to compromise my family’s health so we spend more on food. But we don’t eat anything processed. That saves a ton right there. No bread, no cereal, no frozen pizzas, no chips, etc…
Tricia says
Milk, butter, and hamburger are all shockers along with not-from-concentrate OJ. I try to get to the local dairy farm that has the cows on site and pasteurizes their own milk, while it costs more ($3.95 a gallon- used to be $2.50 5 years ago), it tastes better and I feel like the difference is worth supporting a local farm. Does anyone have comments on eggs that are supposedly fortified/free range/etc? I have to admit the commercials have gotten to be (examples- Egglands Best) since I started feeding eggs to my son. Are they really different? I do feel a little better with sales and coupons.
rachel says
shop the mexican stores and organic markets. I got 7lbs of oranges for a buck 1.27 lb strawberries, 1.89 96 ounce apple juice. Milk here is 2.46 and I am actually glad my kids eat nutella 3 bucks a jar.
Crystal - SoCal says
When we moved out to SoCal from the Midwest, the first thing I noticed was the huge jump in dairy prices. However, you can get some insane deals on cheap produce compared to the rest of the country. I think it depends on how far they have to truck the food to get it to you.
Erin @ My Mommy World says
I am continually shocked at how much I have to pay for produce! It almost makes me want to start my own farm ;)
Rita Timar says
Strangely enough, it was a buy one get one. The Emerald nuts almonds. They were buy one get one but I didn’t realize till I was at the checkout that they were 5.99 each, ouch. I won’t be getting those for a while.
Denise-Scrapmouse says
The price of eggs has hit $2.03 for a dozen. And the price of peanut butter has really gone up too. Ouch!
Jan says
Milk has been $2.49/gal here for a little while not sure what is up with that it’s a really good price!
I have noticed many many items that were always 10 for $10 (aka $1) at our grocery store like forever that are now $1.29, $1.49 etc. everything is creeping up.
Mandy says
Publix milk is also hormone free unlike other generic brands of milk. Also, I work at Publix & I went price comparison shopping at Walmart 1 day and there were a lot of things that were more expensive at their store. If an item is BOGO at Publix, Walmarts can NEVER beat our prices. There are normal Publix brand items that are cheaper or only more expensive by a few cents than Walmart brand. Our items are also 100% money back guarantee if you aren’t satisfied for any reason. If you know how to shop right you will get more on sale at our store than at Walmart.
Angela - Key West says
I love Publix. I don’t live near a WalMart, so it’s not an option for me. I was an Albertsons shopper for years until I discovered the beauty of shopping at Publix during their BOGO sales combined with coupons. I rarely go to Albertsons anymore. Keep up the good work Mandy!!
Sherri says
It is so hard now a days to make ends meet. I try and feed our family of seven but it is getting harder and harder. Spending Monday thru Wednesday gathering sales and then trying to print them out. I ran out of ink two weeks ago, Going to Piggly Wiggly to get our meat and Publix for our BOGO’s. Walmart has milk for $3.12 gallon and bread $1.25.
Becca says
Cereal!!! Every time I walk down the cereal isle I am shocked that anybody would buy it without a coupon even on sale it is crazy!!
Ang says
Like you the last thing that made my jaw drop was
Cream cheese at $1.98 when it used to be .98 not too long ago.
Generic bread at $1.39 when it used to be .89 here.
Milk always makes me scratch. I am just glad there is no state minimum on dairy in IL. I just got it for $1.99 a gallon at Walgreens and I usually stock up on Saturday of the sales there. Then I wait for the next sale or go to Aldi’s. Walmart here is near $4.00 a gallon. Walgreens has been on sale for $2.89 for about a year now till the last $1.99 sale.

One more thing…
If you live near a Whole Foods, start following their sales and pick up several of their “Whole Deals” coupon books. They stack with manufacturer coupons, have no limit how how many of each item you can buy, and they give you a 10% discount on cases (which in many cases is not that many of an item.)
Pick up several each time you go because the online coupons never ring up and it ends up being a pain in the neck. Also, the coupons are good for a month after the new book comes out so stock up. I’ve gotten some of the best deals on their “365” store brand after the new books come out and the old one is gone.
My last check came to $125.00, but with the Whole Foods coupons & manufacturer coupons I paid only $56.00.
http://www.wholefoods.com
Their advertised sales, different from the sales in the “Whole Deals” book, run from Tuesday to Tuesday.

i was shocked a few weeks ago when i saw leigh high valley milk for 5.39 for a gallon at walmart needless to say i bought walmart brand but even so it was over 4.00 a gallon. i ended up at sam’s club a few days later and their milk is 2.73 a gallon. what a big difference that made considering i go through an easy 10 gallons of milk a week for a family of 8.
KB says
I have changed the way I shop to offset all of the increases. For instance, I bought several extra hand towels and stopped buying paper towels. Im making my own bread now (actually, my bread maker does all the work.)
I also try to cook 3 or 4 days worth of food, twice a week, that way I’m not constantly cooking, but we always have food in the fridge. We can still eat out, but with meals already made, we don’t feel the need to.
Ang says
To the person who bought hand towels and got rid of paper towels. I did that a while back and found buying a bundle of microfiber clothes at Sam’s club for under $10 was the smartest thing I ever did. We use them for everything and just toss them in the washing machine with our clothes when we do a load. I also cook a bunch of meals once a week for the week so there is always food in the fridge and freezer and I am not a slave to the kitchen. Great minds think alike here.

I wish our milk cost thst much in Canada. It’s easily $5+ for milk. I buy the fine filtered milk as it has a longer expiary date, & have wasted milk in the past from it going bad, so I pay a little more but it lasts longer so I’m not throwing it away.
Amy says
The Smart Balance tub of butter is now 7.29 and grapes were 3.99 per lb at publix in Fl.

Bread and milk mostly….bread for the generic brand for$3.00??? Everything has gone up trmendously I would not be able to eat without couponing!
Melinda says
Our Target has it on sale this week for $2.59 a gallon. I saw it is only $2.99 at TJs.
Carrie says
Yeah, Not sure where in PA it’s 3.50 since it’s been well over 4 for the past 2 years in NE philly. I do buy my milk at the Sunoco because of the state minimum pricing, putting it almost .30 cheaper than at the grocery store. Money that I am putting back into a fund. Since we go through 2 gallons a day I am saving about 4 dollars a week. Imagine putting aside 100 dollars a year just by shopping for milk a block away. Amazing!!!

Pop! It’s our one luxury when it comes to groceries. I check the local stores to see who has it cheapest, but some weeks there is NOTHING on sale and we end up paying $4 a 12pk. I justifiy it by calling it my coffee :)
I’m not very old, but I remember when $2.50 was the regular, non-sale price.
courtney stasko says
$7.99 lb for american cheese,Land o Lakes

Central NJ bread 3.99 a loaf, unless u hit Walmart for 1.29, eggs are so over priced, we brought 6 hens to get our own fresh eggs, much better tasting, n forget about the price of veggies, will plant 3 xS the size garden this year and grow own..everything is so expensive. For our family of 6 and even w ith couponing it’s so hard.

I went into Albertson’s last week and saw a can of Libby ‘s Corn-beef for $5.29!!!!
I was amazed at the price ! I remember being able to buy that product for $2.29 or 2 for $5.00!!!! I am still in dis belief over the prices of some of the grocery items I have been seeing lately…Coupons all day ,everyday in my house, dont shop with out them!
berkeley says
Albertson’s is ridiculously overpriced on EVERYTHING!! Even with double coupons a lot of things are still cheaper regular price at other stores. I have no idea how they stay in business. The thing that got me was the 2lb roll of Jimmy Dean sausage was $10.99 at Albertson’s or I could go across the street to Walmart and pay $5.28!! I can say that Walmart has a great price on milk at $2.39 a gallon :)
Angela - Key West says
I had the same reaction when I went to buy milk at Publix a couple of months back. I had been buying my milk at CVS and Walgreens for months thanks to their dueling sales, but ran out on a week without sales. I went to Publix and saw it was $4 for a gallon of store brand and was shocked. I went online to one of the deal sites to see what milk would be on sale when the new Publix sale started in 2 days and found that Smart Balance would be on sale & there were matching coupons. Needless to say I went without milk for 2 days. I now pay better attention to the sales and stock up on Smart Balance when it’s on sale because with coupons I can usually get 2 half gallons of lactose free milk for $3, which is less than a gallon of store brand milk. I have learned that I’m not that picky when it comes to milk anymore … I’ll use soy milk and almond milk too, whatever happens to be on sale works for me.
caroline says
Organic milk more than $8/gal (well, $3.98/half gal X 2 plus almost 10% tax.) And dried peas and beans have really gone up, too.

I live in Canada and shop in the USA weekly. Our milk is $5.00 a gallon normally, $3.00 for 12 eggs, $6.00 a gallon for gas! I know it’s expensive for you but for us it’s a deal!!!
I buy my darigold milk from a family gas station for $2.79 a gallon and stock up at cost cutter when I find 18 eggs for 1.79!!!
Plus all my coupons I use down there!!!

Even at Aldi’s the prices have gone up on some staples. I have paid anywhere from $0.89 to $1.29 for a dozen eggs there ever since the store opened here. Last week I went there and they were $1.99!!!!!! Milk fluctuates there too, but I’ll still buy it there compared to Publix and Walmart – both are more expensive.
Bernadine says
It’s getting increasingly difficult for me to get food for my stock pile at my rock-bottom price. This time last year I refused to spend more than $1 on a box of kid cereal, lately the best I’ve found is $1.33-$1.50 with coupons.
Savanna says
I would pay that without blinking. Milk is $5.00+ a half gallon here in Hawaii. I can’t wait until we move & have lower food bills.

We live in the midwest. I wanted to make some fruit salsa so I was looking at our local small town store. A small container of strawberries was marked at $4.99. A cantelope was $5.99. I wasn’t going to pay those prices so I just walked out.
TCourtney says
For me it was Mayor. I needed some at Christmas and it was over $4.00 a jar. I usually use coupons and try to buy on sale, but i think the last time I had bought it I paid about 1.50. Bacon is also something that rarely goes on a good sale anymore and i can’t spend 6 or 7 dollars on something like that.
Lindsay says
Im one of those who doesn’t coupon. I stopped for the most part. I’ll use coupons for household items if we need them, but that’s about it. We drink almond and coconut milk in our house only, buy all of our fresh produce from a local farmers market unless a store has a good sale, and chicken is the organic hormone free kind which costs us. I’d rather pay a little more for all fresh food that I know is good for us to eat rather than pay dirt cheap for processed foods. That’s just me. I think it’s awesome that so many people get their groceries for so cheap and can save that couponing money for vacations.

Honestly a lot of things make me say “REALLY?” when I shop. We’ve been pretty lucky in my home town (Northwest IN about an hour out of Chicago) our local supermarkets always seem to run a special on milk for $1.98 a gallon, sometimes the store brand other times Deans, but at least every other week it is on sale. The other one has it this week for 2 for $5. I did a 4 hour grocery shopping run today, spent about $300 BUT FILLED(back, 3rd row,2nd row and some in the passenger seat) my ENVOY up with food and a couple of other non essentials (like an angry bird hat I HAD to get my son) so I didn’t think I did too terribly bad and that should hold me us (family of 6 with 4 boys, 2 of them teenagers that eat like theres no tomorrow) for at least 2 weeks. Might have to go get bread & milk after that.
Carol B says
Eggs, is a huge one. Kroger milk is only 3.19 a gallon. I prefer to get it at Aldi in the 2.00 range! Avocadoes for 1.50 at Publix. They were 2.50 for months on end..at least 6. I called corporate and complained that I was able to buy the same size for .99 or .89 at Aldi. The corporate buyer called me back and they went on sale a week later. Apparently I wasn’t the only one complaining.
shirley says
It surprised me milk was less at trader Joes then Walmart same with eggs. Coffee was under 4.00 a pound at Costco last January I wanted to stock up but DH thought no. It is almost 6.00 per Pound for my coffee beans. I may be drinking water only soon with the prices going up.
Jessica says
I never experience sticker stock over bread or milk – we purchase bread at the thift store and freeze it until we use it. We just got a great deal over the weekend and bought 5 loaves for $2 (and we bought “diet” bread, our usual brand, as well – 40 calories per slice). Also, I would suggest using dry milk to make liquid milk. We started doing this recently, and while I’ve heard that in the past (20 years or so ago), dry milk tasted horrific, we did a blind taste test and we could not tell the difference – and trust me, we make enough money that if I wouldn’t have liked it even the slightest bit, we would’ve kept buying organic milk, which is what we’ve been buying religiously for the last 5 years or so.
Shannon O says
if you live in PA and have a Turkey Hill or a Bottom Dollar Foods they have milk the cheapest… and BDF has eggs the cheapest… normally 88 or 98 cents for 12…

Popcorn, non microwavable, over 5 bucks. Needless to say I didn’t buy any even though I got a cool popcorn maker for Christmas.
And 1.99/lb for just simple red delicious apples.
Laney says
We also got a popcorn popper for Christmas. My store ran the kernels BOGO last week for $4.99 & also had a coupon for free popping oil. Otherwise, forget it! I couldn’t believe how expensive it was.

If you have a Trader Joe’s nearby you should check the cost of kernels there. My 4 year old bought 2 bags of them for daddy for Christmas and I am certain we paid less than $4 for both bags! We air pop it.

Employee discounts definitely help, especially in stores that have a large selection of store brand products. The price of milk always shocks me mostly. It’s a staple in our house and we get 2 gallons a week.

I have sticker shock over the milk, soda and bread because all 3 of those things are malnutritious. Paying good money for food that doesn’t boost health is no good.
monique says
How is milk and bread malnutritious?
Marcie says
Monique- I was thinking the same thing, but to each his own, I guess. Milk and bread will always be healthy staples in our household.

everything goes up with the recession. How do they expect people to live on such high costs? Its ridiculous. I live in FL but I don’t buy milk, I get the substitute and its a little cheaper(i.e. soy, etc). and I coupon to the best of my ability…
Christy says
How is Soy milk cheaper? I spend $2.38/half gallon store brand OR $2.76/Silk every 3 days because that is all my 1 year old can drink. Whole milk (which I buy for the rest of us) is $3.19/gallon.
Sabrina says
So many in the last few months!!! Shredded cheese for 2 pounds/8 cups has gone from $7.98 a package to $9.98 a package to $8.98 as of yesterday (walmart). Everything has gone up crazy! I am a federal employee and we have not had pay increases. I have quit even couponing at the regular grocery store here because they were way too expensive. Now it is Walmart and Aldi’s all the way. Oh and CVS, Rite Aid, and BJ’s. The higher the prices get, the more stricter I get in my couponing!
Tammy says
I live in Maine and for quite awhile now store brand milk has been just about $4.00 a gallon and brand name milk is close to $5.00 a gallon. I live close to the NH border so when I’m there I can get a gallon of store brand milk at Market Basket for $2.69. You have to wonder how far these prices can and will go. It’s scary.

I’m with you on that one. That was true sticker shock, all thanks to the peanut shortage.
Pat says
Seriously? Here is Delaware, Planter Peanut Butter is on sale next week 2/$5 and I have $1.50 off 2 coupon. Now I’m definitely stocking up. I hadn’t heard there was a peanut shortage.
Sally says
Yes, there was a peanut shortage. I work in the grocery business, the only reason there are some good sales on it is because the deals were made to have the sale items and on the sale prices long before the prices started rising.
Dawn says
40 oz for 7.89 – THANK GOODNESS
Dawn says
sorry – did something goofy.
I was going to say:
Thank goodness for the BOGO sale at Publix coming up. I only buy it when it is BOGO. I remember when $8 would get you a big, industrial sized can of Peanut Butter.
Katie says
I agree with the eggs. At the grocery story they are always over $2!!! For 12 eggs! At Target they are $1.18 regular price, so we always buy them there.
The other is ice cream. I really wanted some the other day and we were at Target. None of the brand names were on sale so I thought I would buy the Target brand (Market Pantry). It was only $0.10 less than Breyers! Seriously?! I was shocked!
Dawn says
Its hyperinflation!!!sadly its only gonna get worse, can, save, do what ya can to save money!!:O)
Vicky says
Milk often gives me sticker shock. It’s also $3.99 for a gallon at both Giant and Safeway (our two largest grocery stores – I don’t know what it costs at some other grocery stores). Target is actually the cheaper of the places to buy it, at around $2.99. But their prices fluctuate so it’s not always that low. ALDI also sells it for less, but something like $3.19 I think.
K2licious says
Here in Southern PA — Whole milk is over $4.00 a gallon at WalMart. Namebrand Double Fiber bread is over $4.00 a loaf – $2.99 on sale!!! Yes, amazes me when I see people buying groceries without coupons or especially without the loyalty card scan. :-O Since when is a $1.00 per orange or grapefruit a sale — that’s the price my grocery store boasts as a sale?!
monique says
Agree on the citrus/ produce in general. But I find when I go to ethnic stores the produce is way cheaper with no blemishes either. I used to buy peperidge farm soft oatmeal bread on sale for $2 now is like $3.99….outrageous!
Dawn Copeland says
I fell out at the price of Sweet tea….It used to be $2.50 for our fave. Milos and the other night it was $3.98 for a gallon! I will start making our own sweet tea ;) OH OH and at our Aldi’s milk was $1.98 a gallon just last year now I cant find it anywhere for less than $3.00 =(

I agree in NJ milk is $4.50 a gallon! And my generic small loaf of bread is $1.39 also and that’s a steal around here. Even with my coupons my grocery bill has gone up 15-20% in the last year.

Stop buying dairy products!!! They are NOT good for you anyway!!!
Nicolle says
Why do people have to get off topic and get on soap boxes. Everyone is entitled to their opionion but don’t berate me because I choose to eat diary or meat etc. I fail to see how the vitamins and calcium in milk is so damaging to my health.
Jana says
obviously they get wic in order to buy milk @ that price! lol

I also blame WIC for the high prices of milk and eggs. Publix gallon milk here in Florida is $3.79 and a dozen eggs is $1.79. Walmart is about the same price.

I NEVER buy vanilla beans, but was making a special dish for Christmas which called for them. It was $15.99 for the spice bottle with 2 (Yes TWO) beans!!! I used the extract.
Beth McDowell says
Vanilla Beans are outrageous! If you must get them you can order them much cheaper on Amazon.com. Most recipes calling for them also call for granulated sugar. If you mix extra extract (1T per 2c sugar) and put in an airtight container overnight it is a suitable substitution to vanilla beans. (I make specialty cakes and cheesecakes for a living, and this works for all my vanilla bean cakes!)

Thanks for that tip!!!

Eggs! I only buy them when they are on sale however hubby thought he would be sweet and bought an 18 count yesterday at Walmart for 2.98. That was sweet of him but I almost had him take them back. What ever happen to them being .99 a dozen! It can’t be just a west coast thing.

Eggs go up every winter (live in FL). Walgreens has them for $1.29 to $1.50 per dozen on sale. They are about $1.79 a dozen regularly. I have seen them for over $2 a dozen in past years so this is high but, I have seen worse in the past 5 years or so. Might get 99 cents around Easter but, gone are the days of Easter Eggs for 50 cents a dozen as I haven’t seen that price in a couple years. This week’s good deal is 99 cents at Kmart (limit 2 and if you are a Reward’s member and maybe regional).
I have letters from my great, great Aunt from the 40’s and she was complaining about 99 cent eggs. When compared to that; I figure I am getting a deal even at $1.50.
Did you know that eggs can be frozen? I have never tried it. You have to break them, mix them and then freeze them in somthing like an ice cube tray. Would be interested in what others who have tried that.

I buy at save-a-lot… 30 eggs for 2.99

I freeze eggs for up to 6 months with no problems! I have a cookie recipe I make each Christmas that takes a dozen eggs so when they go on sale I buy them, crack and scramble them up and add a few teaspoons of sugar and freeze in a gallon freezer bag till I’m ready to bake. You can use a bit of salt if you’re going to use them for scrambled eggs or other cooking so they don’t taste sweet. If I get a good deal I also do a freezer recipe for a 9 egg quiche that is wonderful and freezes great too!

Milk has been around 3.50 awhile here in Pa, I won’t buy it in walmart because here it is 1.00 more expensive at walmart but I noticed this morning at the shell it said state minimum pricing so I think I’m gonna try there next time I need milk.
