Spaceship Earth is also known as the ball or golf ball at Epcot, and it’s the park icon. It is the first thing most guests notice about Epcot and was intended to do so. Learn more about Epcot’s park icon with these 5 fascinating facts about Spaceship Earth.
1. Largest Free Standing Sphere in the World
Spaceship Earth is the largest free standing Geodesic Sphere in the world. Spaceship Earth stands at 180 feet tall (18 stories), with a 165 diameter. Making this attraction a historic accomplishment.
2. Labor of Love
Spaceship Earth was no small feat to create. It took over 2 years to make, 26 months to be exact to bring to life Epcot’s park icon.
3. Rain
Guests standing under Spaceship Earth during rain will not get dripped on. This is due to Spaceship Earth’s advanced gutter system that collects rain within its outer layer and then redistributes it to the World Showcase lagoon.
4. An Attraction inside
Spaceship Earth is not only the parks icon, it has a ride inside too. Take a 16-minute journey through time and communication with an interactive screen available in several languages. This slow moving ride is great for all ages. Spaceship Earth opened with the park on October 1, 1982.
5. Hieroglyphics
Notice the hieroglyphics in the Ancient Egypt section on the ride. These are not made up hieroglyphics. The hieroglyphics are based on actual writings by Pharaoh. Which is just another little detail Disney went above and beyond with.
