Lets save some money

Saving money….. now there’s a topic we all love. Most of you are here reading my blog because you want to save more money. We save at the grocery store and we save at the drug store. But there are lots of ways we could be saving and stretching our dollar…..

I have heard several people recommend using dryer balls to cut down on the drying time in the dryer AND eliminate the need for fabric softeners and dryer sheets!

Two balls can cost you about $10 but should MORE than pay for themselves in no time!

Have you tried them?  I would love to hear your thoughts!

Reader Chona at Tzunami Writes sent in her homemade oatmeal body scrub idea:

Take an old (but clean!) sock and fill it with 1/2 cup of oatmeal.  Tie it off in a knot just above the oatmeal.

Dip in warm water during your bath and scrub.

This is a great tip for that winter time dry, itchy skin and for kids who have skin issues!

Read more about it here.  Thanks Chona!

Use an empty tissue box to store plastic shopping bags in!  I hate shopping bag clutter.  I keep them because I have uses for them but I’ve never found a good way to keep them until now!  Just stuff them one at a time into an empty tissue box.  They are contained neatly and compactly and can be store easily, but they are also easily accessible.

How does this save you money?  Well, check out all the uses for those plastic grocery sacks here!

We all know that we can get paper towels pretty inexpensively if your a couponer, but you might find that a few microfiber towels work better and help you save in the long run.  Besides just using them to dry things like you might use your kitchen towels for or to clean up spills that you normally use paper towels for here are some more ways that microfiber towels help you save money:

  • sweeping and mopping floors (in place of Swiffer refills!)
  • dusting (they trap more dust without shedding it!)
  • cleaning counters (instead of using clorox wipes)
  • windows!  (no streaks & and no need for paper towels!)

To keep your microfiber towels in top shape, wash them separately from other items.

Save on electricity when you’re washing clothes by using the soak cycle.  The soak cycle will fill the washer, agitate the load a little and then let it sit, just “soaking” in the sudsy water.  After soaking a little while, run a short wash cycle and let it rinse and spin as normal.

How does this save money?  Well, when the washer is “soaking” it’s cleaning your clothes without using any electricity.  Run the shorter cycle after soaking and your clothes are getting just as clean with less electricity than run them on a normal wash cycle.

Do you ever run a dehumidifier?  The water is yucky when it’s time to change it so you just toss it, right?  NO!  It’s still perfectly fine for watering houseplants!

Here’s another Let’s Save Some Money post on not wasting water.

As far as I know, there is no conclusive proof that this will extend the life of your razors, but I know a few people that swear by it!

Simply, dry your razor blade after you use it and store it somewhere besides the shower.  Water sitting on the blade and the steam from staying in the shower causes the blade to rust which is what dulls it long before using it dulls it.

Containers with lids like sour cream and butter tubs can be saved for storing leftovers in.

Juice bottles can be refilled.  Especially useful if you dilute your kids juice.  You can take a full bottle and pour half into an empty bottle and fill both with water.

Baby wipe containers are great for storing small things and are nice and stackable.

Peanut butter and mayonnaise jars can be cleaned out and used to store homemade sauces or dressings.  They also make great containers for dried beans or noodles, instead of storing them in the bags they come in.

What other product containers can you reuse?

I like to use all my plastic grocery sacks to line the small garbage cans in the house.  Saves on having to purchase rolls of small garbage bags.

Also good for dirty diapers, cat litter boxes and cleaning up after the dog.  Why buy special bags for that when every time you buy groceries they give you FREE ones?  ;)

What do you use your plastic grocery bags for?

If your family likes instant oatmeal you’re paying a premium for the convenience of those little flavored packets.  Buy a container of plain quick oats and add it in when you’re making the packets.  You can get the amount of two packets from one when you add some quick oats and still the flavor that you like.
