Most people don’t realize there is a right and a wrong way to cook brown rice. It has a thicker coating on it than white rice does and requires a longer cooking time. If you are using the stove method, make sure to look at the back of your package to see how much water you need per cup of rice. A lot of brown rice brands require more liquid than white rice does. Make sure your water comes to a rapid bowl before adding brown rice in, then cover the pot and DON’T TOUCH IT for at least 30 minutes. Check to make sure it’s not burning after 30 minutes, then return the lid. It usually takes 45 – 50 minutes to cook. If you want to cook it in the oven, bring your liquid (water, brother, etc.) to a boil FIRST before pouring it over the rice in your baking dish. Then cover tightly with aluminum foil and put it in the oven at 350. After 45 minutes, take it out, fluff with a fork, and put it back in the oven uncovered for 15 minutes. Also, either way you decide to make yours, only stir it once while it’s cooking. Over stirring will cause your rice to become a sticky mess. If you follow these steps, you won’t have to worry about having crunchy, uncooked rice next time.
