This week, I went grocery shopping on Friday. Here’s why.
On Thursday, I had to take my Glucose Test. For those of you who have not been pregnant, a glucose test is administered in order to see if you have gestational diabetes. The test consists of you drinking the grossest sugary liquid on Earth, and then waiting an hour to have your blood drawn.
In olden days (when I had my last two children), you had to fast before the glucose test. But now, modern mamas can have their breakfast and their glucose test, too. Only, no one told this lady. Cut to me being dropped off at the doctor’s office at 1:45 after fasting all day. Slightly woozy, but really looking forward to a delicious feast in just an hour. I drink the drank and because my doctor is lovely, she sees me for our regular appointment during my hour long wait.
She informs me of another fun, new development in pregnancy. In addition to getting a flu shot, I will be getting another shot that they used to give you post birth at the hospital but has since been determined by science and doctors and science doctors to be more effective pre-birth. Sure, just keep the shots coming! At this point, I was so hungry I had nothing to lose.
Each of my arms gets a shot, and then it’s time to take 56 vials of my blood, and then I’m free, free to run to the loving arms of my husband and the cool bliss of our car and maybe a doughnut or six.
Except Mr. B was not there. He had gotten caught in after school traffic. That was okay, that’s what waiting rooms are for. I settle in, daydreaming of cheeseburgers, until my daydreaming turned to actual dreaming…Y’all, I fell asleep at the doctor’s office.
I couldn’t have been out that long, because the next thing I knew, Mr. B was calling me to tell me he was outside. I wiped the sleep from my eyes, the drool from my chin, and was off. Suffice to say, I had not the strength to go negotiate produce prices. Instead, Mr. B took me for doughnuts and that made all the difference.

Overall, it was a great idea for me to take the day off of shopping Thursday. There weren’t a lot of weekly ad deals to be had, and the Digital Coupons were also scarce. I needed all my wits about me to find some delicious, nutritious, relatively inexpensive meal ideas. Steak taco salad, Chicken Ziti, and Jerk Chicken with Mango Salad were all options I would not have been able to contemplate after my two hundred shots and empty stomach. It’s good to have a routine, but it’s also good to be flexible when you need to be.
Do you switch shopping days in case of extreme circumstances or do you poor through no matter what? What kind of circumstances are big enough for you to switch shopping days? Please tell me I’m not the only one to fall asleep in the doctor’s office! Gimme all your thoughts in the comments!
