Do you know what this stain is? If you have kids, whether two- or four-legged kids, you know exactly what this stain is. It’s the MYSTERY stain.
No one knows what made the stain, who made the stain, or how long it’s been there; more than likely you’re the only person who’s even seen it, and you, of course, are the only one who can clean it – right? If you’re nodding your head right now, stay with me. I’ve got a fabulous remedy for you, and it will either cost you nothing or about $1 plus tax.
Here’s what you’re going to need:
Yep, that’s it. Water, a couple of towels (one light and one dark), and shaving cream. No, the shaving cream type doesn’t matter. I’ve done this with gel, cheap-o white cream, girly pink stuff…every case turns out the same way – stain free.
So here’s what you do:
Pour some water onto the stain. You don’t have to flood out your carpet, just get it wet enough to make suds.
Now add a little dollop of cream to the stain. Right on top there. Don’t get fancy, we aren’t getting ready for the ball or anything.
Massage the cream into the carpet just like you do when you wash your hair. Make it super foamy. (This could be a great way to get your kids to clean the stains for with you!) Now that you have a little mound of foam on your carpet where the stain used to be, take the dark cloth and put it on the mound. Press down hard – stand on it even, if you’re like me and have no upper body strength – because you want to soak up as much of the foam and the water as you can.
Pull up the towel and pour a little water on, then drop the light towel onto the area. Press down again.
The stain should be gone (if not, repeat the process) and your carpet should be a little scented – don’t worry, the fresh shave smell will fade.
This has worked for me with pigmented makeup, mystery stains, cat stains, coffee stains, paint, etc. The only time this hasn’t worked for me was when my darling child decided to write on my velour sofa…that’s a whole other post.
Let me know when you try this out and how it worked for you, will you?
