This week the challenge is to save…. $33
How did you do last week with saving $52? You should have an additional $122 in savings now.
5 creative ways to save money:
- Make homemade versions of convenience foods you buy. One of my favorites is the Homemade Cream of Chicken Soup.
- Clean the vents of your fridge, dryer, air conditioner and computers to make sure they aren’t having to use more energy to power through the dust.
- Don’t store your credit card number on your computer including on merchant websites. The easier it is for you to shop online, the more likely you are to do it! If you have to get up to find your credit card every time you want to make a purchase, you might make less because it is a hassle.
- Find another young family in your area and offer to swap babysitting services. This way you don’t have to pay for a babysitter when it’s your turn for a night out.
- If an item is broken, attempt to repair it first. Youtube has a video for everything and you can usually find a video by a professional that walks you step by step through the process of doing it yourself.

Are you up for a Money Saving Challenge? You’ve probably heard of the 52 week money saving challenge and I thought it would be fun for us to do it together! I wanted to change things up though and instead of us saving in typical order, I have devised a way for us to save $1397 over the next 52 weeks while making it creative and fun! We won’t be going in numerical order and I replaced the $1-$9 amounts with $10 (so 10 weeks we will save $10).
Before you get started with the challenge, you need to make sure your family is on a budget. You can use my FREE Budget Binder to help get control of your finances. The goal for the money saving challenge is that the money will come from your weekly allowances and not from your overall budget. So you’ll save the money by saving more at the grocery store, not dining out, using less gas, avoiding spending money on miscellaneous items, etc.
You’ll deposit the money into your fund. In 52 weeks, you’ll be $1397 closer to your goal just by doing this challenge! You’ll continue to save money in other ways too. For a trip to Disney World, you’ll need to save about $3000 (aiming for at least a 5 night trip, maybe longer!). My goal is to help you do that in 18 months. If you do this challenge for the next 18 months, you’ll have $2095.50 saved by October 5th, 2016. You’ll just need to save $904.50 from other creative ways! That means you could visit Walt Disney World during the holiday season in 2016 and if you can get off during the first 2 weeks of December, you’ll pay some of the lowest prices of the year.

I love this idea, but it’s really not really practical for my family at this point. Our income is sufficient for us, but I’ve realized that after four weeks, it’s just too much of a strain to pull that much money out of the budget. Every dollar has a name and we already don’t have “extra” expenses (cable, eating out, etc). $10 wasn’t so bad, but $40 and $52 were practically impossible. I’m already putting all “found” money of various sorts, gift cards, rebates, and other extra monies into our trip fund. For me, I want this money saving challenge to be extra from the budget, not out of what I was saving anyways. My new goal is to save $10 a week for the duration of the challenge. I’m so excited to have a new goal and still participate, but not one that is going to overload our budget and be a burden. Just thought I’d share in case someone else can be encouraged to do what you can!
