This is a shot of our television as we watched a tornado rip through the town of Tuscaloosa (about 75 miles from here). The tornado was over a mile wide and went right through the heart of the town. It then made it’s way up towards Birmingham and they said on the news “The Tornado just hit Birmingham Southern”. My brother is at that college and was in a bathroom at the time. I was beyond scared until I heard he was safe. Then we watched as the tornado got closer to us. It turned and missed us by just a few miles, but my mother in law who lives 10 miles up the road saw it from her window.
But that was just one of the tornados yesterday. At one point I counted 4 on the ground. This morning they reported that 128 people have died. One man lost his wife and his 2 children. That could of so easily been us earlier in the day….
Yesterday morning I woke up at 5 am to start blogging. I had a dentist appointment so I wanted to get posts scheduled while I was gone to keep all the deals coming to you all. Around 5:45 I checked Weather.com and was shocked to see a tornado warning for Birmingham. I turned on the news and there was a surprise line of storms (we were expecting the evening storms). The news said it was headed straight towards Moody, so I woke up the family and we went to sit in the hall.
The house began to shake. The wind was howling and rattling the windows. The front door kept beeping (house alarm) and trying to open. We were all scared and praying for God to protect us. At one point everything got VERY quiet. Then it started back with a rage. We believe a tornado touched down just behind our house at that time. After it quieted down, we went to assess the damage.
This is a picture my friend Michelle took from her backyard. This building is directly behind her house and her house is just 20 houses up the street from mine. That is a steel building that toppled in the storm.
Our church is less than a mile from the house. The steeple was found 45 feet from the building on the ground. We lost part of the church roof, a bunch of awnings and there was a gas leak they had to get under control.
My friend just moved from a trailer park in February. That park is located 2 miles from my house and the news reported that 120 trailers were destroyed in the storm. The news have not shared any pictures of it. That is a lot of people to lose their homes. A lot.
We were very lucky. The hand of God was definitely over us yesterday. Our house suffered minimal damage. We lost 1 sheet of shingles. I spoke with a lady up the street who had every window blown out of the back of her house, her roof was destroyed and she lost a bunch of siding off the side of her house. I drove through town yesterday and it was like driving through a war zone. Some areas of the road only had one lane open for both flows of traffic because the other side was blocked by trees. Twice I had to drive under a tree that was hanging on a power line. Homes, businesses, fences were all crushed by trees.
They are saying this is one of the worst tragedies to hit Alabama. It is overwhelming to watch the news. Photo after photo of destruction, people crying, homes ruined. And all I can say is…
“And I’ll praise You in this storm
And I will lift my hands
For You are who You are
No matter where I am”
We are blessed to be alive. Thank you all for your prayers for our family. I could feel them wrapped around us. Please keep my fellow Alabamians in your thoughts and prayers.

God definitely had His hand over you all. I’m so glad you are safe and my prayers go out to the families there. I live in TX but I’m from Columbus, MS so you are technically my neighbor. :)

I can’t imagine. Tornadoes have always been one of my biggest fears, but I’ve never had to deal with them, thank goodness. I hope this is the end of it. I’m glad you and your family came out safe.

Just saw the news footage on our local news here in Ohio. I’m so happy to hear that you are all safe. Praying for you and your community. Bless you, sis.

Our God is an awesome God.
I’m so glad that you and your family are safe. Your post sincerely brought tears to my eyes. Hopefully, the storms are done for a long while. I watched tornadoes on the news last night touch down around the place I went to school…saw photos of students walking the pathways…I can’t fathom how frightening.
hugs and prayers from Virginia.

I’m am so glad you and yours are all okay. We’ve been looking at the photos and praying for our fellow workers at the Nucor plants in your area. The photos are just scary. I’ve not had one hit my house personally, but I’ve watched many go through the fields close by here in Indiana. It’s awesome and scary to watch all at the same time.
Randi says
What a joyful blessing it is to have your family safe and sound. I remember living through those when I was little and we lived in Birmingham. There’s nothing quite like uncontrolable weather, it’s just so scary.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of Alabama right now.
PS it warms my heart to know that you have a stockpile to eat on and share with others. What a blessing couponing has been to you and now others.
Kim says
I completely agree with all your feelings Kristin. I watched in shock and amazement at that tornado yesterday also. Very scary and tragic day and we are so blessed to have avoided any damage. So glad you and your family are safe. It shows you yet again that life is precious and in one second your world can be ripped out from under you. Praying for all those who had damage in our area and for those who tragically lost loved ones. You can replace things, although tough, but not family. God bless!
Crystal says
I’m very glad you and your family are okay. I will be praying for all those affected by the storm.
Judy says
Thank you, God, for prayers answered. Two friends from our small group at Edgewater UMC in FL headed to NC to help cleanup but now are being diverted to AL. I have no idea where they will be, but they joined the team because of all the help we received when Hurricane Charley devastated our area. Good luck with the roof repair. Just don’t tell the insurance investigator you can wait…we did that and still had a tarp on our roof 7 months later! lol. No, we were glad to wait, although supplies got really scarce and expensive in the meantime, which is why it ended up being 7 months!
Sunny says
May your faith continue to be a beacon of light to your neighbors. Indeed, Praise Him in this storm. (Great song/lyrics for anyone who wants to check it out on YouTube) Americans and people everywhere are praying for y’all in your time of need. Prayer Power works wonders.
Rhonda says
Praising God that you are all okay! Praying for those that didn’t fare as well. We live in “tornado alley” of the Midwest and have seen the hand of God many times in the past. Take care!
MM says
I read a recent report saying there’s over 285 now listed as dead. I pray for all of you who have been victims of these storms (in any way), for those that have been lost, and those that are left behind.
I understand how scary these things can be. My husband barely survived a similar situation. We had a tornado warning 3 years ago (it was still a mile away from our town) and my husband drove down the road (3 blocks) toward our house to get home to me and to safety (he was out on the farm). Lightening from the outskirts of the storm hit a tree and it collapsed, right on my husband’s truck. The ONLY part of the truck NOT flattened by the tree was a little cubbie of the driver’s side. It took my husband minutes to open the door to escape (luckily he was 50 feet from the house) and in the midst of it all left the truck running. Due to the size of the tree, the truck didn’t move anwhere even though it was running still in drive.
I lost my father when I was 19 (my husband never got to meet him) and I truly believe my father was riding with him in that truck on the way home. Given the way the tree fell and landed, there should be no way my husband survived. Needless to say, thank goodness I decided to go home early to make dinner instead of finish working on the farm with him as the roof of the passenger side was on the seat and floor. The Lord sends out his angels to watch over us, and I thank the Lord I have my father to watch over my family.
When this occurred and my husband came into the basement and told me a tree hit his truck I of course didn’t think anything of it…he didn’t even have a scratch on his body…I thought a branch fell on the hood or the bed…needless to say I lost it when I went outside to see what had actually happened. That wasn’t the first tree to fall on my husband’s vehicle while he was driving (believe it or not)…but I pray that it is the last.
Gayle says
I’m so glad that y’all are safe & that the damage was minimal for you. I’m heartbroken for everyone who lost so much in these storms. My family (including my parents & 2 of my sisters) lost everything in the post-Katrina levee breaches in New Orleans, but we were so grateful that we had enough warning to get out of town & that everyone in my family was safe from harm. The best word to describe the days & weeks that followed is “surreal” – it’s hard for the brain to register what your eyes are seeing. Prayers to you & all those affected to help deal with the weeks & months to come.
Hilary says
wow! Amazing how God protected you and your family during the storm. I am so very glad you guys are safe.

Hello there! My name is Christy and I’m from Burlington NC. I have been following your website since last year. I found it as we were planning a trip to Disney. I am a couponer and your site is one of my favorites. I just wanted to say thank you for all of your time and dedication. You help Mommies like me save money for our families and I really appreciate that. I am so happy to hear that you and your family are safe.
Denise says
Wow Kristin, thank GOD you’re okay. We are in upstate NY and had a harrowing experience ourselves. The kids and I were driving home in the rain, something hit the top of the truck. Took me a second to realize it was hail. Then I looked in front of me to see a BUNCH of hail the size of golf balls falling and beating up my truck. All I saw directly in front of me was a black wall. So I immediately stopped and turned around. All of these IDIOTS stopped in the middle of the road. I was thinking, if this is a tornado, that’s not a good idea. I had no place to go so I pulle up next to a house and shielded the truck from the hail. It finally stopped and turned into a really hard rain. I looked and the black wall was gone. So I turned back around and proceeded the way I had come. I’m so glad that I turned around the first time because if I’d kept going, right where I would have been were trees all over the ground, some across the middle of the road (not really bad though) and people that lost siding and tree limbs. Drove back up near my house with lights/sirens flashing. They turned right on my street. I was scared that something happened to my house. Nope! Not my house. Not sure what happened but we were safe. That same storm did create a tornado north of us but wasn’t that black wall that I saw. Whew! My nerves were shot for the rest of the evening!
Christy says
I am so glad that you and your family are ok. It’s strange, we have never met but I feel like I know you after reading your posts. Please let us know if there is anything we can do. God bless. Your family and your community will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Stephanie says
I’m so glad you and your family are alright!!!
Julie says
Thank God you and your family are safe. I am so sad for all those who have lost loved ones or lost their homes due to all these storms!
Jennie says
Glad everyone at your home is well. Truly a scary time. People worry about hurricanes, but they are like lumbering elephants. Easy to get away from, if you pay attention. Tornadoes, on the other hand, will hit out of the blue.
Wondering about your ‘glory to God for deliverance’ attitude though. You feel that God was watching over you because you didn’t sustain injury or damage.
Does that also mean that God wasn’t watching over those unfortunates that were killed/injured or sustained property damage?
Did they do something to warrant God’s ignoring them?
Did they not pray enough?
Did you do something to insure that God protected you?
Was the damage to your church a signal of God’s displeasure?
Or is survival through something like this due to blind chance?
Amy W says
I believe it is perfectly ok to be thankful when you live through something so horrific! This is not the time to pass judgment. This is the time to get out your check book and start helping those in need! Bad things happen to the good and the bad, and I’m sure Kristin is probably out helping her neighbors right now!
Christy M says
We don’t always know why God allows things to happen. We can only believe and know that He is all-knowing and His wisdom is much greater than ours.Maybe the loved ones that passed on fulfilled His purpose in their life. Maybe they were suffering with something else in life, some type of illness, maybe that they weren’t even aware of yet and He chose to end their suffering. He knew what the outcome was going to be of this and all other storms before we were even created! He is a fair, loving, and just God!
MM says
Very well said Christy. It couldn’t have been said any better.
Jennie’s comment reminds me of losing my father to cancer at 19. My dad’s suffering with cancer was short and actually quite peaceful. He went in and out of consciousness and actually regained perfect vision (he was legally blind without glasses) in the weeks before death.
A year after he died, my grandfather (on my mom’s side) was diagnosed with the same cancer. His suffering was horrific…complete opposite of my father’s. It doesn’t mean he deserved it more or didn’t talk to God enough so he got a harsher punishment.” I feel as though the Lord answered my grandfather’s prayers and took some of my father’s pain and suffering and gave it to my grandfather, so that my brother (11 at the time) and I didn’t see our father suffering in such a horrible way. Now that shows just how loving and wonderful the Lord is.
jenny b says
I am so glad you and your family are ok! My family lives in east central mississippi only about and hour to an hour in a half from Tuscaloosa i think. Areas around there got hit pretty hard also. It took till 11 last night until i was able to get ahold of my family there (they all live in trailers so i was really worried). My sister finally called me a little after 11 turns out that all the phones and cell phones are messed up around there and they were all out of electricity and prob would be for a few days. My famlies homes and my family are ok but a lot of people around there weren’t so lucky. Some family on her husbands side lost everything they had. Her and her daughter hid in the bath tub while it hit and when they climed out the only thing left was the bathtub. Thank God they are ok. Things can be replaced people can’t. Places i grew up by were destroyed and listening to all the damage and destruction is just unbelievable. I am so very happy all of you are ok though God was truely watching out for all of you.
Bridget says
I’m so glad to hear that you are all alright. I can’t even begin to imagine what that must have been like for you. How scary! All of the people of Alabama are in my thoughts and prayers. Be safe!

Jayne @ Mimi to Tee and Bee says
We were once the only house on our block to still be standing. I had 9 people stuffed in my bathroom and I understand the terror. I know that I know that I know that God’s hand sheltered us that day. I had ONE broken window. ONE. The house on either side were flattened. A tree that would have smashed through my home toppled the other way. I used to have the testimony but I lost it somewhere along the way. That tornado can be found on lists of the worst spawned during that out break in May 2003.
Jayne @ Mimi to Tee and Bee says
And I’m sorry…I hit submit before I got to the most important part of my comment:
I am sooo thankful that you and yours are OK and my prayers are with your state and all the other states. Healing and recovery can take a while.
Rhonda says
I am so glad you escaped this tragedy. Right now I am very worried, my mom lives outside of Athens, which is north of you and I can’t get her on the phone. I don’t know if it is because of power lines being down, or what. I can only pray they are all okay, most of my family live in Alabama and it is very hard for me being down here in Florida and not knowing.
Leisha says
So glad that you and your family are safe. We are praying for all that are suffering.

Glad to see that you are ok!

I lived in Moody for two years, and Alabama for 28 of my 29 years…just moved to Colorado last summer…so devastated to see what has happened back home. Heather says
So glad to hear that you guys made it out safe…. So sad to hear about all of the devastation.. We are supposed to get part of the storm today but its only supposed to be rain, hail and all that. I can’t imagine how scary that must have been !! I will definitely keep you and your family and community in my prayers !!

I am so glad to hear you all are ok. I will continue to pray for you and your community.

I’m glad you and your family are safe. I know we don’t know each other in person but I spoke of you last night to my husband and were thinking about you as we watched the news! So glad you are safe! We live in Atlanta, so it was supposed to come through but it went more north of us.

I am so glad to hear that you and your family are safe. It is hard watching everything on the news. You, your family, and community are in our prayers.

I am very glad that you are safe. Is there a place where people can donate toiletries or canned goods from our stock up piles? I’m not in the area, but I do donate to this area.
Nic P says
Good morning, and I say that fervently because it is a reminder that it’s a new day and life goes on, piece by piece minute by minute.
We were hit by the 1999 tornado that tore through Oklahoma and Kansas.
http://www.wunderground.com/wximage/viewsingleimage.html?mode=singleimage&handle=Bigsteve&number=246
I am linking to the photos, but if they are upsetting at this time, please just disregard. The reason I post them is that that is what “was’ and at that time I couldn’t see past it. It was all consuming, painful, tedious and frustrating. Then you top all that with a big old dose of fear, anxiety, memories etc. It’s just a really hard process.
Hold tight to your faith, do what you can to help others, and watch your children really closely. Kids are resilient but unfortunately they can’t always speak their fears. It took a long time for my children to be ‘ok’, and every time we left the house it was just another reminder for awhile.
It will heal, God is good, things will pass.
Be well, and even though you don’t really know me, if it helps to talk with an objective person who’s walked through, please do email. I have strong shoulders.
Bless you in this time of really tough stuff.
theresa says
Kristen my heart just raced when I saw the news this morning. I had a feeling that you and your family may have been affected but so happy to know that you are all safe. My heart goes out to the familys that lost loved ones. Though we don’t understand why this happens we can take comfort in knowing that God is with us in the storm.

So thankful God protected your family. Very sorry for the devastation surrounding Alabama. Praying for strength for you.
Laurie Martinez says
First the tree incident…now this!!! God is watching over you. :)

Praise the Lord indeed! The weather in this country…this world…has just been so crazy lately. No matter where you live there is possibility of some form of natural disaster. We live in Rochester, NY and I always say that I’ll take a massive snow storm any day over all the other stuff but even we had a tornado watch last night.
I’ll pray for you all. It’s the least I can do for all the help help you’ve given me since I found your website.
BTW – I love that song!
Heather says
So thankful that you and your family are okay! God definitely watched out for your family! Out of curiosity, do you have torando sierens?

So glad you and your family survived the day of weathers horrible wrath!
i will keep all those in your area in my prayers!
Katie K says
I am so glad you are Ok. The weather can be very powerful and it’s beyond scary when you just have to ride out a storm. I hope your area is able to rebuild soon.
Anne says
We had tornados hit our area Friday night. Even our airport was hit (St. Louis Lambert Field). My kids were scared. But we kept explaining over and over what to do if they were headed our way. Thankfully we only had hard rain and pea size hail at our house. But others up north were not so lucky. :-(
Sharon says
I am so glad you are all safe. We were in the Kansas tornado of 1999. We left our house and went to my in-laws (they had a basement). There house was hit. It was one of the scariest thinks we ever experienced. My husband was the last person under the stairs and he said he could feel it pulling on him. That haunted my for awhile. Help the ones who were hit they will appriciate it I know we did.
Becky Holcombe says
I agree Kristen. The scariest thing I have ever gone through. Emotionally I am drained. The devastation for miles and miles of Alabama is beyond belief. It was crazy yesterday with the sun out all afternoon. We have a tree down but luckily no injuries. Still waiting on word from my friends, my coworkers and their families. I am typing this on what is left of my computer battery. Once it is gone, we will have no power. Over 400,000 without power. Prayers continuing for those impacted by yesterday’s weather.
Katie says
I am so happy to hear that you are safe and better yet, that your house sustained minimal damage. I don’t live anywhere near the storms but I have been absolutely glued to the news/internet for the past 20 hours or so. I am absolutely heartbroken for everyone who has been impacted by these storms. I’ve been watching video clips and crying right along with the people on the video. I will continue to pray for you, your family and your community as everyone tries to pick up the pieces and rebuild.
Julie Isbell says
i liked this only because you are alive and safe! i don’t like seeing all the devistation. but, kristin, as you stated, the hand of god was protecting you and all who are still safe. we had a tornado go through our small town in 2007, and driving around looking at all the damage was as you stated like driving through a war zone. luckily for us, noone was killed or injured. i will continue praying for you all. glad you are safe!
Shawna says
So glad to hear that you and your family are doing good. I cried as I read your story. I have never been near or seen a tornado so I can’t even imagine how scary that is. I am in Charleston, SC so we are going to be getting it today but hopefully nothing like you experienced. Praying for all the people in Alabama.
Peg says
I’m happy to hear you and your family are safe! I’m praying for your community as it works towards healing and cleaning up.
Crystal says
I had no idea you lived in Alabama (I’ve been a fan of your page for about a week or two now), but I also have family in Alabama and I was praying for everyone in the path of the storm, we were suppose to get some of the bad storms here in Ky last evening, but thankfully they went off to the east of us and we just got regular thunderstorms and rain. I as well thank God for keeping a hand on you and your family, I can’t imagine how scary this must have been for all of you………Take care, and thanks for all you do to help all of us on here you are appreciated….:)
Jennifer in GA says
Praising God for His hedge of protection around you! I have so many friends in Alabama and Tuscaloosa especially, they are all safe as well as their homes. I will lift everyone up in prayer.
We were hit hard in GA yesterday too, but NOTHING like Alabama. Praying for everyone involved. Such sad devastation…
Lucy Viramontes says
Wow. It’s always heartwrenching to see the coverage on TV but to see what someone you know (even if just on facebook) went through just magnifies it. Thankful God was there with you and kept you and your family safe. My prayers are now with those 128 souls.

So glad to hear you are safe!

I am glad that you guys are alright. I never went to bed after we spoke last night. I kept thinking about you and everyone else in the path of that horrible storm/tornado. Prayers and love to all those that effected!
Olivia Smith says
I am so glad to read that you are safe and sound. I am praying for all of those affected by these storms!! :( Thanks for the update.
Heather says
I understand what you are going through. We had a tornado his on April 16th here in VA. It went straight throuh our town destroying homes, one of our middle schools, and killing several people. It looked horrible. It has changed the whole area we used to live in and a lot of people lost their homes here as well. It is scary and it really makes your heart sink into your stomach when you see the damage it causes in person instead of watching it on the news happen in a town a few states away.
