My re-found love for Disney started about a years ago, I have always been a huge fan and have very much enjoyed all my trips to the parks but it took some tough times to realize how magical Disney can be to each of us in our own way.
Three years ago I was injured at work tearing my shoulders, I went through one operation on the right and four operations on the left shoulder. Due to complications my left shoulder is now paralyzed, the rotator cuff is newly torn and the right shoulder is torn again from over compensation. The medical process has been a nightmare to say the least.
Trying to stay positive I found an amazing foundation and decided to fight back against my new disability and do something I had never done before run a 5K. I signed up with “Homes For Our Troops” and registered for my first RUN DISNEY event. Well lets just say that was it, I shared my personal goal with my partner Rene’ and her family to run my first 5K at Disneyland. I instantly had a full support team. Rene ran beside me and her family went with us including Grandma to cheer us on. We became our own FAB FIVE!!
We all started couponing, Shopkicks, Swagbucks, mplaces, perk TV, and louder. We did a garage sale, eBay and Craig’s listed un-needed items. I can’t tell you exactly how much we saved to make this trip possible but I can tell you If I had to estimate it would be near $5,000 combined in about seven months.
The race was an experience I can’t even begin to explain, It was painful but worth every mile. crossing the finish line and seeing our cheer squad screaming and ringing their bells made me realize anything is possible, especially at Disneyland!
Bitten by the Disney bug we continued all the savings and we are able to make a Halloween trip in October, and in November we ran our first 10K.
We will be running our first half marathon at the Tinkerbell half marathon weekend and Rene’s family will be again in the stands cheering us on until the Disney race weekend when they will be doing their first 5k and 10k with us!!
So as you can see what started out as a very tough struggle turned into a truly magical and life changing experience. Disney has brought our family “The Fab Five” closer together and given is all the courage to pursue new dreams!!
