Fresh herbs are an easy way to jazz up any dish! They pair perfectly with various meats, salsa’s, salads, and so much more. Often times they will cost anywhere from $0.50 for cilantro to $4.00 for fancy bagged options. When you add in how quick they go bad. You could easily spend $6.00 or more a week just on fresh herbs. While I enjoy cooking with herbs, I can’t afford to buy them week after week. That lead me on a quest to save money on fresh herbs.
- Buy your own herb plants to make a container garden. Most herb plants cost around $3.00 each. Instead of spending $3.00 on a small bag of whichever herb, buy the whole plant that will continue giving fresh herbs for years if properly cared for. Added bonus you will feel like Martha Stewart going out to pick your herbs for dinner.
- If buying store bought herbs you can extend their shelf live by weeks with this trick. As soon as you get home from the store. Rinse the herbs, wrap a paper towel around it. If the paper towel isn’t damp all over wet it. Then stick the paper towel wrapped herb inside a plastic bag, and place in your crisper drawer.
- When fresh herbs get on their last leg. Chop finely and freeze for later use. Or you can add them to a food processor add a little water and blend into a paste. Use later on in cooked dishes.
