Inspired by some of my fellow Savears, I decided to make shirts for my upcoming Disney trip. I originally planned on doing bleach shirts, so this is a remix of that idea. The idea of using bleach was a bit intimidating to me so I went with fabric paint instead. Supplies cost me about $35 total for five shirts, which comes out about $7 a shirt. I still have enough paint and contact paper to make even more shirts, so this price could go down. This is also a project that can be as expensive or cheap as you make it. I had to buy contact paper, shirts, paint, and an exacto knife. If you have some of these on hand already, that makes it an even cheaper craft! A friend of mine also used acrylic paint that she had on hand for her shirt and they turned out great, so that could be another cost saving solution.
I first printed off my silhouettes. I was able to easily find the characters I wanted online. To save ink, I traced the Peter Pan right off of a computer screen.
I then traced the designs into contact paper and cut them out. For more intricate designs you make want to use an exacto knife. I was able to use scissors to cut out Genie and Peter Pan.
Then you simply peel off the back of the contact paper and stick it to the shirt. Spray on as little or as much paint as you want. I bought my fabric paint in convenient spray bottles (again there are cheaper options to make this a frugal craft). To create a galaxy look on the Peter Pan shirt, I sprayed up close to make concentrated circles in all the colors. Then I sprayed from further away to make a starry look.
When the paint is dry, peel away your stencils, and you have a one of a kind Disney shirt!
This was really fun and a great way for me to have shirts with our favorite characters without having to hunt through stores. This craft is easy enough for the kids to do (with minimal adult help with the cutting and tracing).
Also you can really have fun with these, experimenting with colors and techniques to create different looks. Have fun with it!
