Are you prepared for the walking involved in a Disney World vacation? It is not uncommon for guests to walk up to 10 miles in a day while exploring the parks, which is an average of just over 20,000 steps. Read these 5 tips to prepare you for the walking involved at Disney World, both before and during your vacation.
1. Shoes
Comfortable shoes are a must for walking long distances and being comfortable while exploring. Avoid packing new shoes for Disney, even though they look nice. Instead, allow at least 6 weeks to break in a pair of shoes for Disney. There is nothing worse than discovering your shoes give you blisters while on vacation. Read, 7 shoe brand recommendations for Disney. Packing more than 1 pair of shoes, to alternate can help as well. Additionally, I like having a pair of waterproof sandals for walking to Resort pool.
2. Lighten The Load
The less you have the carry, the less burden on yourself. If you are bringing a stroller, this will not apply. Avoid carrying non-necessary items in bags. Also consider using a backpack or a cross body bag to better distribute the weight.
3. World Showcase
Out of the 4 main theme parks, Epcot will most likely be the park you do the most walking in. This is partly due to exploring the World Showcase. Take a stroll around the World Showcase Lagoon and see each country in the World Showcase is a favorite at Epcot. However, this walk alone is 1.2 miles and that is not even the whole park. Take a mile walk at home and you will have just about walked the World Showcase!
4. Get A Step Counter
A pedometer or modern step counter will work. Some will even have step counters on their smart phone. Track how many steps you normally take in a day at home, then compare that to 20,000 steps. This will give you a sense of how much walking can be done in a day at Disney World. Gradually increase your steps prior to your Disney vacation to better prepare.
5. Rest & Hydrate
While at Disney World remember to hydrate by drinking plenty of water. Ask any counter service for a cup of ice water. Take breaks as needed, Disney World has benches and nooks to find a seat. Little ones will need breaks often, select attractions can be great for a break. Stop and have a snack when you can’t eat a whole meal. Consider a Mid-Day break. These simple reminders will help guests while exploring Disney parks and be ready to walk some more Wheelchair & Scooter rentals are also available.
