Here are 59 Money Saving Tips to help you stretch your dollar further.
- Order water when you dine out instead of soda or tea
- Pack a lunch for work instead of eating out
- Eat leftovers for dinner one night
- See a movie during the matinee hours instead of at night
- Skip your weekly meal out and have a homemade picnic instead
- Find creative recipes for what you have on hand by searching each ingredient in Google (example: Chicken, Rice, Garlic)
- Check with your cell phone provider to make sure you are on the best plan for your needs
- Keep snacks in the car for when you are out and about
- Consider choosing a slower internet speed. You might not even notice a difference!
- If you have multiple trash services or power companies in your area, call both and see who has the best rates. Sometimes they will compete against each other for your business.
- Watch a video on youtube on how to sew and repair clothes instead of throwing them out.
- Write a list before you go shopping and stick with it. Not just for the grocery store, but also for yard sales, consignment sales, retail stores, etc.
- If you have credit card debt, call and ask for them to reduce your interest rate.
- Cancel your cable
- Instead of going out with your friends, invite them over instead. You could play a board game or watch a movie.
- Clean your car’s air filter. It can improve your gas mileage by up to 7%! Just look up instructions in your car’s manual.
- Make homemade versions of convenience foods you buy. One of my favorites is the Homemade Cream of Chicken Soup.
- Clean the vents of your fridge, dryer, air conditioner and computers to make sure they aren’t having to use more energy to power through the dust.
- Don’t store your credit card number on your computer including on merchant websites. The easier it is for you to shop online, the more likely you are to do it! If you have to get up to find your credit card every time you want to make a purchase, you might make less because it is a hassle.
- Find another young family in your area and offer to swap babysitting services. This way you don’t have to pay for a babysitter when it’s your turn for a night out.
- Bring snacks and meals with you when you run errands. Instead of dropping into the nearest drive thru, you’ll have your meals with you ready to consume.
- Evaluate your cell phone bill and see if there are any services you can drop or if you are using less minutes or data then what you are paying for and can move to a lower plan.
- Find out if your job offers any benefits you aren’t taking advantage of like the Tickets to Work program or discounts on cell phone bills. Visit HR to inquire.
- Don’t speed. My mother in law got a ticket for $187 for speeding. Just don’t do it!
- If you are tempted to stop at a fast food restaurant or a coffee shop every morning on your way to work, drive a different route. If you aren’t driving by it, you won’t be as tempted.
- If you are debating on going out to eat when you should cook at home, sit down and eat a banana and wait 10 minutes. Your brain might just enable you to change your mind!
- If you are assessed a late fee or a penalty, ask for it to be waived. If you have never been assessed a fee before, they might just say yes.
- Check for air leaks around the doors and windows and seal them to avoid losing your ‘bought’ air.
- Turn your air up one degree. You might find you are just as comfortable and you’ll save money!
- Skip the dry cleaning. Check Pinterest for tips on how to iron a crisper looking shirt and slacks.
- Spend 24 hours thinking about your purchase before you make it.
- Check your bank account statement to see if you are being charged hidden fees or even a monthly rate for the privilege of having a checking account. If you are, change accounts or banks.
- Put your gym membership on hold.
- If you take a monthly prescription, check with the pharmacy to see what your cost on a 3 month refill would be. You might come out cheaper!
- Attempt to cut down on the time you are in the shower to save money on your water bill and your electricity (or gas bill depending on what type of water heater you have).
- Instead of buying a new exercise DVD, check Youtube for people’s workouts. You can get off cheap and do a different workout everyday.
- Turn off the water when you are scrubbing dishes or brushing your teeth.
- Go to the movies during the matinee specials.
- Contact museums and zoos in your area and ask if they have a day of the month where they discount admittance. Our zoo discounts admittance on Tuesdays.
- Before you purchase clothing check the label to see how you care for it. Avoid things that have to be hand washed or dry clean only.
- Wash clothes on cold water (except for towels and sheets). It can save as much as $0.50 per load!
- Leave your credit card and debit card at home when you are running errands and only bring cash with you. You’ll be unlikely to overspend!
- Take snacks with you when you go grocery shopping so that if you get hungry you already have something with you. Don’t count on buying your snack while you are out, you might overspend.
- Bring your own bags with you when you go grocery shopping. A lot of stores will give you a small discount for using your bags.
- Use a basket when you are grocery shopping with a small list. It will keep you from putting too many items in your cart.
- If you live in a state that requires you to pay a deposit on cans and bottles, make sure you go through the hassle of returning them. Your pocket will thank you!
- Drink more water not just for your health but also for your wallet. We save over $50 a month by giving up our soda habit.
- Quit buying snack packs and start making your own snack packs instead. Buy the bigger bags and make time as soon as you get home to split them into smaller portions. A kitchen scale will come in handy for this!
- Buy your produce when it is in season, not just because it is your favorite fruit/vegetable. Eating in season can save you a lot of money.
- Double Your Recipes – Cook twice as much on one night and then freeze it for the future. Having a meal in the freezer will help keep you from eating out.
- Shop Off Season – Now is the perfect time to get next summer’s wardrobe for a fraction of the cost. I always shop off the clearance racks and stock up on clothes in future sizes.
- Get Rid Of Your Landline – Unless you have to have your landline as part of your internet package, it might be time to cut the wire! If you primarily use your cell phone, you are throwing away money paying for your landline.
- Keep a pitcher by the sink and in the tub. Whenever you are running the water to heat it up, collect the water and use it to water your plants, boil pasta or make lemonade or tea.
- If you currently drive during rush hour, talk to your boss about changing your hours so that you can either come in earlier or later than you currently do (and work a full 8-9 hours). This way you will miss the gas guzzling traffic while still working your full shift.
- Set a timer to see how quickly you can complete your shopping trips. The less time you spend browsing the store, the more you will save! This will help cute down on impulse buying.
- Quit buying K-Cups and invest in either a single serve coffee maker or a reusable K-Cup
- Start browsing Pinterest for homemade gift ideas for Christmas.
- Make sure all of your electronics are on a surge protector. You can also quickly unplug them when you aren’t using them to save even more
