There are so many ways to save money. Which is a plus. But it can be hard to determine which apps are for you, and which apps won’t fit your needs. Which is a bummer.
One of the questions often fielded in the SavEars is, “What do you guys think of _____ app?” Or, it’s popular cousin, “What are your favorite apps for earning?” Well, we’ve got the answers for you! I’ll be reviewing a new apps here, in the App Spotlight. These apps have been test driven over the course of two weeks, enabling us to bring you pros, cons, tips, and tricks.
This week’s app is…
What is it?: A cashback app for grocery shopping.
Saving Star is a popular grocery app that provides cashback for items. Like most savings app, it’s fairly straight forward: it’s free to download, free to use, and available on both iPhone and Android.
Offers are updated regularly, with the cash back ranging from .30 to $3. Simply choose the coupons you’d like to apply to for the purchases, tap on them to add them to your list, and to redeem scan your receipt. Your cash bank can be sent directly to a bank account, PayPal, or redeemed in increments of $5, $10, $15 for Starbucks, $10, $15, $20 for iTunes, or $15 for AMC Theatres eGift card.
One of the unique features of Saving Star is the option to use the offer as “one or many.” While not available on every offer, it is usually an option for several products. This allows you to choose to redeem the offer once or multiple times on duplicate items. If you buy three Oui Yogurts, with a cash back of .30 and you see the option for “one or many”, you have the option to redeem .30 for each yogurt, bringing your total up .90. This is a great option to take advantage of when your stole has stock up sales, like Kroger’s Buy 6, Save $3.
Who is it for?: People who go grocery shopping, so… everyone. The earning speed on this will be slower than some other apps, as there are usually around 60 offers, almost exclusively brand names. If you are buying yogurt, and are open to changing brands to get cash back, this could be a great app for you, as they vary their brands. If you purchase a lot of name brands, this could be a great app for you. If you, like me, do your shopping, and then see what applies for cashback, this will be a slow earner, but free money is free money. Every little bit helps.
In the weeks I was test driving it, offers ranged from frozen foods to snack food to beverages to cleaning products. There were healthier options, such as Nature’s Valley and Larabar, and more snacky options like Friday’s Frozen Appetizers.
Where do I use it?: On your smart phone. Available in the app store.
When do I use it?: This is where Saving Star gets a little tricky. You can only get credit for your purchases if you add them on the app the day of or the day after you do shopping. So, if you make your purchases on Thursday, you need to apply the desired offers to your list on either Thursday or Friday. You then have until Friday to scan your receipt. If you purchase on Thursday, add on Friday, but forget to scan until Saturday, the cash back will not apply.
During my test trial I had at least two instances where I added the offer, went shopping, and forgot to scan my receipt for a day or two. Which drove me crazy and cost me at least .60. Sixty cents, ya’ll! More than our other grocery apps, this one requires you to be a little more diligent. If you buy a lot of name brand products, that diligence can totally pay off because the pay out on some of these items is pretty generous.
Why do I use it?: To get cash back on item you purchase as party of a grocery trip. As mentioned above, Saving Star offers a lot of name brand products. During my trial period featured brands included Sargento, Oscar Meyer, Goya, Purex, Butterball, Totino’s, Friday’s, Pillsbury, El Paso, Starbucks, Atkins. The good news is that many of these offers are also featured on other savings apps, so there is the potential for double savings.
Final Verdict: Recommended. This might not be the fastest or biggest earner, but it is essentially free money for very little work. Use Kristin’s code C446 and start off with a bonus!
