A lot of news is coming out today about Disney’s Park Pass System and one of the new announcements affects Disney Resort stays.
Disney is exploring new ways to use your phone and app, and in 2021 they plan to “unveil an innovative new offering as part of the My Disney Experience app that will bring features of a MagicBand to your smart devices, building on the app’s existing digital key feature.”
With this new offering, Disney will be ending their free MagicBand program for Disney Resort guests for new reservations with arrivals beginning Jan 1, 2021. Previously, each person with a Disney Resort reservation received a free magic band, leading to some very cute crafts as folks who went on multiple trips tried to figure out what to do with the excess of bands.
This doesn’t mean MagicBands are going away entirely. You can still purchase a new MagicBand at a discount, purchase them at retail locations or on shopDisney.com. You can also continue to reuse MagicBands you already own. MagicBands will still be able to be used around the parks!
If you prefer not to purchase a MagicBand, you will be able to use the My Disney Experience app or Key to the World card during your visit to act in it’s place.
What do you think? I know the moment your Magicbands arrived was a very popular and exciting picture for the Savears to share, a physical reminder that their trip was getting close! Will you purchase new bands, reuse your old ones, or move entirely to using the MDE app?
I love the magic bands!! I can never get my phone to unlock the room doors and I hate to lug my phone with me everywhere. I’m very sad they are cutting this.
While I love magic bands, if they aren’t free then I will just use the app… it kind of sounds silly when you are paying thousands of dollars to go on vacation… but every penny saved helps!
That’s so true! We usually stay off property, so when we bought our first set, we just kept using those over and over again.
