The LEGO Movie introduced a lot of new characters and provided some comedic twists on some favorites as well. Among the fresh new faces, the one character which seemed to get everyone’s attention was Unikitty, the rather odd looking mini-figure who often seemed to border on being just a little insane. It’s already been confirmed that Unikitty will be returning for the second LEGO movie while the sets associated with the film aren’t making their way to shelves just yet, LEGO does have a new collection of Unikitty mini-figures.
The new Unikitty series is one of the many off-shoots of the brand. While they are still mini-figures, these technically aren’t part of the usual numbering system meaning that since series 18 recently came out, these aren’t series 19. In fact, if you look at the package, this is series one meaning that there are going to potentially be additional lines in the future. A similar approach has been taken with the Batman mini-figure line as well as others, and I wouldn’t doubt that the upcoming Harry Potter collection features the same approach. The Unikitty series has twelve figures in total but I must admit, this is a collection that I’m a little disappointed in.
While there are twelves figures in total, there isn’t really a great deal of variation as far as the figures are concerned. There are three variations of Unikitty found within the collection with the major difference being the color. As far as the three variants, you have a standing Unikitty with a rather bushy tail and perked up ears, a second version which is still standing but has a balled up tail and folded ears, and then a sitting version. The difference between each of these is little more than the coloring and facial expression. There aren’t any cool accessories or anything of that nature. This is also a collection that, unlike others, becomes very difficult to determine what is in each blind bag. This isn’t simply because of the lack of versions but each blind bag also is packaged within a separate plastic bag, so you can’t simply move it around as easily, not that I believe that would make it simpler. Okay, I feel a ball, so it would be one of four different versions.
My daughter and I have been enjoying spending time putting different LEGO sets together and collecting mini-figures when we run across them in various locations, but this is one series that we have different opinions on. I find them to be bland and extremely uninspired. I feel this is more an attempt to work off the popularity of the character and besides the mini-figures, there is also a variety of Unikitty sets which have hit store shelves. My daughter on the other hand is in love with not just the mini-figures but the sets that have been released (and those Power Puff Girls LEGO’s that recently came out as well.) So, while dad might not like them, it seems that the kid vote may win this round as I begrudgingly pick up yet another blind bag to appease her.
