Mara had wonderful big portions! Dining plan is always a go at Disney! We were able to use the Adult portions for our 8 yr old quick service. Salads are wonderful , plenty of room and not to forget the african face painting. One of the great places to visit and dine at. Side note AkL has amazing activities for children which start early! – Moniqua

Speaking of the zebra domes that Tiffany mentioned, here’s a recipe for a zebra-dome inspired desssert from Mr. Food – looks so good.

Mara is a wonderful place to eat. The zebra domes are awesome. You can get them for a snack credit on the dining plan. We eat here every trip to Disney.
The Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of our favorite places to stay. Be sure to explore the resort when you are there. My kids love the gift shop too.
My family and I just ate here the other day! I had the pita chicken with cole slaw (very delicious!) and a fruit cup. You get in line, place your order and the person gives you a pager to let you know when your food is ready. The only shocking price I saw was for a small side salad which was $3.99 – however, they had a larger salad with more fixings in it for about $8.00, which would be perfect if that was your main meal. My grandmother had the african stew which she said was very good. I would definitely eat here again and we may try to go back before our trip is over next week. Also, if you wanted to buy one of the kids meal items (such as the uncrustables, carrot sticks, grapes, etc.) you could as they were sold seperately and did not require you to purchase an actual kids meal. I highly recommend doing this if you are looking for something different to add on to your main meal item! :)
We just got back Thursday night. Loved Animal Kingdom Lodge! Mara had wonderful big portions! Dining plan is always a go at Disney! We were able to use the Adult portions for our 8 yr old quick service. Salads are wonderful , plenty of room and not to forget the african face painting. One of the great places to visit and dine at. Totally agree with Maggie…The African Stew is awesome! I totally crave it when I go home & have made the recipe (see my blog post: http://www.ratetheplateutah.com/2011/06/eat-in-african-stew.html). The roast chicken is okay. I love the African breakfast selections (bobotie & chakalaka are fabulous). We’ve eaten here a lot since we love to stay at the AKL.
I love The Mara! Since we’ve been making annual trips to Disney for the last 5 years, we wanted to start experiencing things off the beaten path, so to speak. No matter what resort you stay in at WDW, you are welcome to visit and dine at other resorts. With this in mind, we took the transportation system to Animal Kingdom Lodge to eat at The Mara. I am a foodie and I loved the African Stew! My daughter was happy with the chicken nuggets. They also have some flatbreads and pita sandwiches. Part of their menu with prices can be seen here on this great website http://allears.net/menu/menu_marald.htm.
After we ate at The Mara, we went out back and asked how to use the free night-vision goggles, and watched some animals grazing after dark out behind the lodge, We also chatted with two friendly cast members working in a college exchange program from South Africa, and one of them gave us a tour of the beautiful hotel lobby. Then we checked out the pool (okay, maybe my DD took a little dip in the pool too…..ssshhh don’t tell because they probably really don’t want you doing that – but no one stopped us and we behaved ourselves). So anyway, I give The Mara two thumbs up for a counter service restaurant :)
