Recently, I saw a commercial where some nice people on the street were asked to pronounce the word “Rakuten.” While these nice people struggled with this word, the commercial explained to us at home all the benefits of Rakuten. And I thought to myself, “Wow, this sounds exactly like Ebates.”
Guess why? Because it IS Ebates. Surprise!
Rakuten (meaning “optimism” in Japanese) acquired Ebates in 2014, but only started to transition the company to the Rakuten brand in 2018. Rakuten stared as an online marketplace in Japan that has grown to own 70 businesses and boasts 1.2 billion users worldwide.
Great, and that’s all very interesting, but what does that mean for me and my Ebates account, you may be asking. I know I sure was.
Nothing changes for us, except maybe we have to learn to pronounce a new word! Over 2,500 stores pay Rakuten a commission for sending shoppers to them and Rakuten shares that commission with the consumers via Cash Back. Just like Ebates. Instead of heading to the Ebates website before you shop, you’ll simply go to Rakuten. Find your desired store, click shop now, make your qualified purchase and earn cash back. The process remains the same and you’ll still get your Big Fat Check four times a year.
Not only is the process unchanged, but so is your account. Your cash back, your account info, your payment settings, it is all still there in Rakuten. The name may have changed but you lose none of your info in the transition and you do not need to set up a new account or anything like that.
For those new to the Ebates (Rakuten!) game, it is a cash back site for online shopping, where each store/site you shop offers a different percentage of cash back.
When you sign up for a Rakuten account, you’ll choose to redeem your reward either through checks sent to your home or Paypal deposits. This app is for anyone who does any shopping online. Rakuten offers cash back at over 2,000 retailers. Chances are pretty good your favorite store is on that list. The cash back options range from 1% to 15% back, depending on the store. Occasionally throughout the year, Rakuten will offer a “double” cash back, so a store offering 3% jumps to 6%.
Rakuten will notify you of cash earned when your order has completely processed through the retailer, usually within a couple of days. Rakuten does not process a payment for every 26 cents you earn. Instead, it lets a balance build and then processes your payment or sends you a check four times a year. Easy as pie. If you’re not already a Rakuten member, sign up with Kristin’s referral and start off with a bonus in your balance.
The good news is, whether we can pronounce it or not, Rakuten is still an easy and effortless way to add to your Disney Fund.
Are you a Rakuten fan? Did you notice the switch from Ebates? How much cash back has landed in your Disney Fund? Tell me all your thoughts in the comments!
