Some weeks the money comes to you and some weeks you gotta go to the money. Before the Saving to Disney course, I would rate my hustle at a 2. Hustle wasn’t a skill I was taught as a wee bairn, and believe you me, it is a skill. Seeing the potential savings in each shopping trip, each spring cleaning, each online deal. That is a talent you work to acquire. SavEars aren’t born, they are made.
This week I upped my hustle game and I am pretty pleased with the result. I am a book lover. Like, Belle’s giant library in the Beast’s castle ain’t got nothing on my personal collection. But one morning, after picking up fifteen books my toddler had thrown to the ground for fun, I had to ask myself “Why do I have three copies of ‘Hamlet’?” Because no matter how good ‘Hamlet’ is, you don’t need three copies.
This launched a three day book binge where our entire family went through all six of our bookshelves and evaluated what we loved and what we had lost interest in. We still have a lot of books, but now we also have room for new favorites. That we will discover by going to the library first, and purchasing as gifts if we really love them. Look at that, another lifestyle change that leads to savings. But what to do with these other books in the meantime? If you said “sell ‘em” then you have a true SavEar spirit!
Off to Half-Price Books, which will buy anything. Literally. Their motto is that they will not turn any book away. You may only get $.25, but that’s $.25 you didn’t have before, for a copy of ‘Hamlet’ that was just collecting dust. Hustling! We did two separate trips (so many books!) and our spoils make up the entirety of this week’s fund deposit. We all know that garage sales can have impressive returns, but I would also recommend establishments that buy your items. You still make those dollars and you don’t have to clean up afterwards.
Total Goal: $3500
Total Deposit: $39.25 (from book sales)
Still Need: $3043.96
How’s your hustle? Any luck with selling back items? How many copies of ‘Hamlet’ are taking up room on your bookshelf? Tell me all about it in the comments!

Is that online store???
Hey there!
Half Priced Books does have an online presence, but the book buy back program takes place in store only. They have a lot of locations, and if you head to the website you can find the one closest to you!
I did not know about half price books, that will definitely be an option for my need gone books!
Hi Jo!
It was a recent discovery for us, too! The buy back process process is pretty painless: you give them your books, wander around the store for a few minutes, then they call you back and give you money. It’s like my idea of the perfect day. :)
