Have you ever bought a package of strawberries, eaten 3 and then the next day found that awful fuzzy mold on them? Isn’t that the worst? I hate wasting food, but at least if it sat in the fridge a week and I forgot it, it’s on me. I hate wasting food even more when I plan to eat it and it goes bad on me immediately!
There is a nifty, easy way to help keep your berries fresher longer- and the best part is you can do it with something you have in your house already.
Simply mix 1 part white vinegar with 4 parts water. I’ve seen this range from 1:4 to 1:10 vinegar to water, but I wanna make sure all that bacteria is dead, so I go scorched earth. 1:4 it is in this household!
Pour the mixture into a bowl and soak your berries. I like to gently move the water around to help get dirt off…and I just like to mess. It’s my nature.
After they’ve soaked 10 minutes (or longer), put your berries in a colander and rinse them. You can lay them out to dry, or gently dry them with a soft cloth or paper towels. Then place them uncovered in the fridge. They will stay fresh up to 2 weeks! No worries- the vinegar doesn’t effect the taste either.
I actually washed the container we got our berries in with soap and water, then dried it. I lined the bottom with paper towels and put the dry strawberries in there!
