Each Spring, the Social Security Administration releases their official list of the Top 1000 baby names used in the past year. The list is full of classics, new inventions, pop culture phenoms, and of course, Disney characters.
Some monikers can scream Disney (Nemo, Merida) while others are a little more subtle in their references. If you are naming a baby, or even a pet, and are looking for a hint of magic, these names in the Top 100 all have a Disney namesake.
2. Olivia
“olive tree”
The second most popular name for girls in the USA is also the name of one of the most charming mice to ever grace the silver screen. Olivia Flaversham is the plucky protagonist of “The Great Mouse Detective.” This name is popular for a reason: easy to say, unique “O” sound and initial, and tons of history. Bonus? A very understated Disney nod.
6. Charlotte
“free man”
A princess twice over! Before there was Charlotte Windsor, there was Charlotte La Bouff, Tiana’s best friend and (briefly) Princess of the Mardi Gras Parade. You can’t go wrong with this name for your little royal.
8. Amelia & 11. Abigail
“work” and “my father is joyful”
The Gabble Sisters from the charming “The Aristocrats” might not be the first thought when thinking of naming of your daughter after a Disney character. But these helpful geese are kind, supportive and cheerful, great characteristics to instill in your little lady. These would be an adorable, subdued pair of Disney names for twins!
17. Sofia
“wisdom”
The First! Combined with the number 5 name, Sophia, this is a name that is common in playgrounds across the nation as well as Enchancia.
24. Grace
“grace”
The sweetest of the trio of heroine cows from “Home on the Range”, this is a name that not many people will associate with Disney, but it’s a beautiful one.
28. Riley
“courageous”
The heroine of Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out” brings a new visibility to a name that was already a popular option for pink and blue babies. Take her to the moon for me!
43. Violet
“purple”
This incredible name is anything but invisible! Not only is Violet Parr one of the crime fighting heroes of Disney/Pixar’s “The Incredibles”, Violet is also the eldest daughter of Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins herself.
46. Audrey
“noble strength”
Two for flinching! Audrey Ramirez is the spunky mechanic in Disney’s “Atlantis: the Lost Empire.” This is another subtle Disney connection for a popular name, with a great way of honoring a mother involved with mechanics or engineering.
54. Anna
“grace”
Usually pronounced “Ann-uh” in the USA, the European pronunciation “On-uh” is instantly recognizable as the princess of Arendelle, who saves her sister with an act of true love. A lovely little palindrome of a name.
66. Elena
“bright, shining light”
Elena! Of Avaloooooor. The second Disney Jr. princess on this list, this is a gorgeous name that is popular in several cultures. A perfect name for your world traveling princess.
67. Sarah
“princess”
The dog disliking Aunt Sarah of “Lady and the Tramp” fame isn’t an obvious choice for Disney names. But if this is a name you already love, it’s a nice, simple connection to one of Uncle Walt’s favorite films.
71. Alice
“noble”
She may not be a princess but this is an essential Disney girls name. How do I know? I almost gave it to all of my daughters! A lovely name zooming up the popularity charts, with tries to British culture, children’s literature, and Disney.
