If you’re streaming classic Disney films on Disney+, you may see a warning that the movies contain “outdated cultural depictions” in the description.
Classics such as Dumbo, The Aristocats, Peter Pan and Lady & the Tramp are sporting the warning “This program is presented as originally created. It may contain outdated cultural depictions” thanks to insensitive scenes- for instance, “Jim Crow” and the other crows in Dumbo, or the exaggerated accents of Si & Am, the Siamese cats in Lady & the Tramp.
While these movies contain their original scenes and sport the warning, Disney’s most controversial movie, the 1946’s “Song of the South” does not appear on Disney+ and there are no plans to add it. Many speculated that with this movie being left off of the streaming service, other classics might have scenes removed to clean up insensitive scenes.
Other warnings, such as “contains tobacco depictions” may also appear on films- for instance, I’ve noticed it in Aladdin’s description and it’s just before the cultural warning in Dumbo.
Are you happy to see warnings on these movies, or would you have preferred edited scenes?
