Hot diggity dog, it’s Disney Spirit Week on the blog!
When it came time for me to decide what my contribution to Disney Spirit Week would be, the answer could only be one thing: a bracket.
See, we here in the B Family are HUGE soccer fans. We watch, we play, we coach, we soccer. In fact, I’d say that it’s a tie between soccer and Disney for family obsession. So naturally we’ve been missing watching our favorite sport. It’s especially a bummer since there were quite a few cup tournaments going on. Which lead me to this bracket. We might not be able to see who wins the Premier League Cup, but maybe we can figure out who will win the Pixar Cup!
Here’s how it works:
There are 22 Pixar films. Using soccer cup guidelines, I seeded them based on box office reports, and put like seeds together to randomly assign matches. Also like soccer rules, and because there were a strange number of movies, the first round has movies competing in groups of three.
Each day of Disney Spirit Week, I’ll post here AND in the SavEars Facebook group the new matches. You can vote in the comments to the blog or on the SavEars page. I’ll stop taking votes at 11:59 pm, the day of.
Each round I’ll share fun facts and trivia to help you decide which of these amazing films deserves to win the Pixar Cup. Every vote counts!
Here’s a complete bracket, for those interested.
Before we get to today’s matches, lets look at the winners from yesterday’s match ups that will be going on to Round 2!
- Toy Story
- Monster’s Inc
- A Bug’s Life
- Toy Story 2
- Monster’s University
- Toy Story 3
- The Good Dinosaur
- Toy Story 4
A Toy Story sweep! Looking forward to watching those matches: Buzz vs Buzz.
On to Round 1, Part 2: We have four matches today, including some critical darlings and the Pixar movie that has made the most off merchandising. Can you guess which one that is? (Hint: rhymes with Lars.) For each of the matches below (E, F, G, H) choose one winner!
- Finding Nemo
- The Incredibles
Lightening McQueen raced to the top of the charts for two weeks, but where he really shone was in home media sales. Five million copies of the DVD were sold in the first two days of its release!
These feisty fish topped the box office for eleven months and broke all kinds of records, including becoming the highest grossing foreign animated film of all time in Japan. It would hold this title until a little film called Frozen came along.
Another film that was predicted to be a “modest” hit, our favorite family of superheroes did super well at the box office, with the highest opening weekend gross for a Pixar movie at the time!
- Cars 2
- Finding Dory
- The Incredibles 2
The critics didn’t love it, but the people sure did! In fact, the tales of Mater’s foreign adventures performed especially well in Russia, where it had the best opening for any Pixar movie!
She may not remember it, but Dory was a huge hit! Her big solo adventure was the highest grossing animated film of 2016.
The Incredibles 2
A month into its release, this high flying sequel made $648 million, surpassing the original’s entire box off total of $633 million. A month after that, it crossed the 1 billion dollar mark.
- Cars 3
- Inside Out
One again these racers won the number 1 spot at release, dethroning the box office heroine Wonder Woman.
The little rat chef who could was a huge hit in France, where the movie is set. It broke the record for biggest debut ever for an animated film! *Chef’s kiss.*
No sadness needed here! The lovable emotions earned over $800 million at the box office and took the train of thought to the be in the top 20 animated films of all time.
Carl and Russell’s balloons took them to an worldwide earning of $735 million. They soared above the competition as the highest grossing animated films of 2009 in Spain, Australia, and South Korea.
This family fantasy was released in Mexico, where it is set, a month before its US debut. This paid off, as it went on to become the highest grossing film ever in Mexico! But that wasn’t Miguel’s only song: Coco went on to become the highest grossing animated film ever in China.
