I know I’m not the only one who forgets their laundry in the washing machine and then has to fight to remove the mildew smell from my towels. Next time that happens to you, try these steps.
- Put your nasty smelling towels (or other laundry) in your washing machine with HOT water.
- Pour 1 to 2 cups (depending on the size of your laundry load) of white vinegar in the washing machine. Don’t add anything else.
- Let your washing machine go through the whole cycle.
- Fill your washing machine back up with HOT water and add detergent. Don’t add any more stuff to the washing machine.
- Let your washing machine run through the whole cycle again.
- Immediately remove towels and put them in your dryer. Run it on the hottest setting.
Your towels should be smell free and clean. If they still have a little bit of a smell to them, repeat the steps above.

This works great if you have a cat that decides to use a towel or clothing on the floor as a litter box, too – gets rid of that nasty cat smell but you have to use a LOT of white vinegar!
