When I was in high school, my home ec teacher taught us this trick on how to soften brown sugar. When air gets in your brown sugar container, it hardens it in no time. This is especially frustrating when you need to measure some brown sugar for a recipe. When this happens, pop the box or bag in your microwave for 10 second increments. Check it after the first 10 seconds and see if it’s soft enough. If not, put it back in for another 10 seconds.
