This tip comes from my reader Karen:
Last August my husband lost his job. We have very limited health insurance coverage and limited income as well. We do not have prescription coverage until we meet our $5000.00 deductible. Recently when my son needed a prescription that cost $212 we were not happy campers!
I came across a website that allows you to download a discount “pharmacy card”. It is free and you don’t even have to give them your name or join anything!! The site allows you to enter you medication name and dosage and
will tell you the cost at LOCAL pharmacies. You are also able to enter your zip code and find participating pharmacies in your area. My son’s prescription with the card information was $41.00!! The pharmacist said that this was a larger than usual discount percentage but hopefully you will be able to save money, too.
Anyone can use this. The website is www.familywize.org. I hope this will be a blessing to others the way is has been for us.
If you have experience with this website too, please let us know!

I agree w ALC… Have worked over five yrs in an independent retail pharmacy in the past – we had over 400 meds on our $4 list. Another option is to discuss your needs w your physician – my asthma med (the only one we’ve found that is effective) was not covered by insurance so he gave me 3 months in free samples while we battled w my insurance. I also was once given 12 months worth of birth control when I was uninsured. In addition to samples, it is worth discussing alternatives w your doc. I’m now an RN and talk to my pts about this often. If the older, less expensive med will work well for you, why pay out the nose for the bells and whistles of the latest one that works similarly (Think omeprazole – aka Prilosec – VS Nexium) Huge price difference but not that different in efficacy.
Just my 2 cents…… Best $$ saving tip: Prevention, prevention, prevention. Take care of yourself and the rewards are more than monetary :D

I always check the manufacturer’s site for coupons. My husband uses Lovaza (for which there is not generic) and the company’s website had a coupon for $20 off.

as a pharmacy technician i see these discount cards all the time…just an FYI…beware when using these card as many of them may charge you more than the pharmacy’s cash price, especially on generic medications. Always check the cash price first. Also, most independent pharmacies will have better prices than chains, and most independents are willing to match or beat any competitor chains price (ei, walmart $4). Support your local economy and independents when possible!!
