I quit using warm or hot water on our clothes years ago. I now wash everything in cold water (unless it has an oil or grease stain). I immediately saw a difference on my power bill and I haven’t had any issues with my clothes. Try it and see for yourself!

I’ve always washed in cold. Never had a problem with my clothes not being clean. I agree with the advice in a previous post to use Dawn to get grease out. I also use Dawn or other dishwashing liquid to pretreat all stains. Works much better on the “food stains” like spaghetti sauce and kool aid. I used to use Shout, but it never got out the really stubborn stains, Most of the time I just use the Ajax liquid that you get for $1 per bottle. I put it in the clothes as soon as we take them off and let them sit in the laundry pile until I wash. Never stains the clothes.

I switched to washing in cold water a little over a year ago and have not noticed any difference in my clothes, they still come out just as clean as they always did. To even make things better, I haven’t had to buy detergent in months! My son won a years supply of laundry detergent at a baseball game last fall by throwing a baseball in to a front load washing machine!!!

WOW! Great tip. I use hot/sanitary cycle on my HE washing machine for EVERYTHING! I am going to try this and see what happens. Thanks!

You don’t even have to use warm/hot water for oil and grease stains. Just pre-treat the stain with a bit of Dawn dish soap. Rub Dawn with your fingers first to form a bubbly paste and eliminate the blue in the soap (it can stain your clothes otherwise) then rub it into the stain. Let it sit for a little while and wash in cold water as usual. This even works with set in stains and stains that have been through the dryer.
