This tip comes from my reader Jen….
When my daughter was first born it seemed like I was doing laundry several times a day just to keep up. I was frustrated with diaper blow outs. It seemed like nothing I was using would get the yucky stains out. So I did some research to see what I could do to get out the stains. To my surprise it was something I had already at home and didn’t cost a penny.
To get rid of baby blow out stains simply hand wash the stain with a bit of soap with COLD water. Hot water will set the stain. Then place the item in the sun to dry. The sun will make the stain disappear.
I know it sounds crazy. My mother-in-law was here from Italy and she is a wiz about cleaning. She irons your socks and underwear. Anyway, she wanted to throw out a onesie that was particularly bad. I told her how I was going to clean it and she looked at me like I didn’t know what I was talking about. After all, when you looked around my house it was not well kept since I was a bit sleep deprived and could care less about house work at the time. I was thrilled to prove that it worked. She was amazed!
I have put things out even when we have a ton of snow on the ground. Since the sun still comes out at some point during the day it still does the trick.
Hope I can save some moms time, money, and clothing by sharing this tip.

Does anyone know if this works on formula stains as well? Or does anyone have any tricks that removes formula stains?

I do lighter colors. If you hang anything out that’s very dark and the sun fades the color out of the entire garment. Pretty much as a rule if it’s washed in warm water it’s safe to hang out.

Does this work for colored clothes too, or just whites?

My mom would swear by the sun method. We call it “sun bleaching.” It works for more than baby stains- just about anything that is “set in” can be bleached out by the sun. It works wonders for tomato-based stains as well. I like doing that instead of using chemicals because my daughter has extremely sensitive skin. Whites also get MUCH whiter in the sun and you don’t have to use harsh Clorox! If you don’t have a clothesline you can just drape things over a patio chair and set in the sun for a few hours. The longer you leave them, the better they smell, too!

That’s how you clean cloth diapers as well, so it makes sense. Cold rinse and then a hot wash and then sun treatment if it’s stained.

I got this tip from someone else, but it is my tried and true method for stains, specifically baby stains!! I fill a 5 gallon bucket about half full of baby clothes with stains, fill with cold water, put a scoop or two of powdered Oxyclean in it and let it sit for a few DAYS. Like 3 or 4. It has gotten out so much that I haven’t been able to get out with anything/everything else!! Just thought I’d share.
I do stir the clothes around once a day or so, but other than that, nothing!

Yes, I use my sisters christening dress for my first daughter and it was yellow! I soaked it in cold water with woolite. It did not take out much but then I put it on thr clothes line and sure enough it became pure white again.
I miss my clothes line… we tend to over do alot of things these days in the name of convenience huh? I have the double load front washer and dryer set now.. It doesn’t work miracles but it sure is purty…=)

If you don’t have time to wash right away; you can also soak in vinager and cold water– I use cloth diapers when we’re at home, and they look good as new when I get them from the wash!

You don’t even have to put it out in the sun. I have gotten out horrendous baby blowouts that way, and it works on blood too. Soak in cold water and scrub with plain bar soap. I always put it in with a load afterwards, but the stain is generally gone before I do. I learned this from my mom years ago, and it works great!

How long do you keep it out in the sun?
