This tip comes from my reader Meagan….
RECYCLING!!! The days of being paid to recycle are back! We found a local recycling plant that will takes aluminum cans, card board, NEWSPAPERS, and #1 & #2 plastic bottles. So, dont toss out your old newspapers, milk cartons, juice bottles, soda cans, cardboard boxes, etc. …recycle them!!! We canceled our trash pick up because it is cheaper for us to take bi-weekly trips to the dump to get rid of our trash. So, recycling not only EARNS money but also cuts the need for a dump run down to once a month. Which also saves us gas. Our recycling plant is on the way to the dump station so we just bring it all in one load. When you contact your local recycling plant, ask if they pay more if your items are separated…ours does.

I’m a member at recyclebank and it says you have to convince your municipality to get those monitors on the recycle bins in order to get the credit for recycling. I guess I can just look up aluminum, newspaper recycling places myself and see if I can get the money for it by bringing it in instead of setting it on my curb for the city.

I live in california and trash pick up isn’t a choice for us. We are forced to pay and receive trash pick up wether we want it or not :(

If you are getting new siding on an older house, it might be aluminum siding – most places will charge you 500 or more to remove the siding, and then they take it to the recycler and get paid again for it. If you are handy, you might want to consider removal yourself, keep the money from the labor charges, and keep the money you get for selling it!

If you wanted to go a step further, you can also compost all of your vegetable food scraps (potato peels, carrot ends, etc) and you may be able to cut down to every 5 or 6 weeks going to the dump, and have some nice garden soil as a bonus, another cost savings…not having to buy potting soil.

I have curbside recycling. Does this apply to me at all?
Kristin of Couponing to Disney says
It’s usually only recycling centers that you drop your items off at.. curbside recycling is run by the city, normally.

Probably not but if you have curbside service you m might want to check out http://www.recyclebank.com which if available in your area they pay you for recycling in gift cards and coupons. There are also contests to enter with points and free points for things on their website. I have gotten coke coupons from them lately bogo free and 1.00 off one product ones. They also have a points credit card that I have gotten.
