Saving money….. now there’s a topic we all love. Most of you are reading my blog because you want to save more money. We save at the grocery store, we save at the drug store, but there are lots of ways we could be saving and stretching our dollar and Couponing to Disney……
You’ve probably heard this tip before but if you are like me, you’ve never thought about putting it to use. If you have an unwanted odor in your home, light a match instead of spraying room air freshener. Not only is it a whole lot cheaper (I bought 500 matches for $1 recently), but you also aren’t spraying all those chemicals in your home.
Obviously this should only be done by an adult and the matches should be kept out of reach of the children (like the top of the fridge). ;)
Do you have a money saving tip you’d love to see featured on Couponing to Disney? Be sure to email it to me!

I can not tell you how many times we have done this in our office.

We have sometimes lit a tealight for this same reason. Never thought of just doing a match all by itself. Only my husband can do this, though … I’m scared of lighting matches and can count the number of times I’ve done it in my life on my fingers.

Vinegar works well, too, especially for cooking odors. Just leave a small bowl with some vinegar in it out on the counter, and it takes out the unpleasant odors.

We do matches in the bathroom as well – works great & saves $$! Friends think it’s a little odd at first, until they realize it works!

my parents used to do this all the time as i was growing up, probably because when they were younger and my bro & sis were little (they are 18 years older than i!), they didn’t have a lot of money. they lived on the smallest of means and some things just carried with them even as times got better. it really does do a good job, and in some respects, i think even better than many air fresheners. i’d love to do it myself but i can’t light a match to save my life and i don’t think using a lighter would have the same effect ;)
on a side note, one product i have found that i LOVE for odors is arm & hammer pet fresh powder. you sprinkle it on your carpet or area rug and vacuum. lemme tell you, a little of that stuff freshens a whole large room and it doesn’t smell like a bathroom or overpowering (i am a SUCKER for cleaning products). it does a good job of picking up pet hair too, but having a pet is not a requirement. i use it constantly. the best deal is at target. you can get a big box of it for $1.99. make sure to get it in the aisle with the rest of the air freshener stuff, typically on the bottom shelf in a big yellow carton. do NOT buy it from the pet section at target. it is half the size and the same price, go figure! and target is the only place i have found that carries the bigger cartons; most grocery stores just have the little ones for $1.99 if not more. a little goes a long way so the carton should last you a few vacuums depending on the size of the area used. such good stuff!!

Oh yes…we keep a box of matches in the bathroom :D.
But I want to emphasize the ‘keep out of reach of children’. We *thought* ours were ‘out of reach’, on the top edge of the shower surround – until my then 2-year-old started my bathroom on fire while I was nursing her sister. Thankfully, it ended well.
