These tips come from my reader Lisa….
I have been packing my kids’ lunches for 4 years and have learned a lot of money savers! Never buy prepackaged or individual sized items. They are always more expensive than buying a larger package of say for instance teddy grahams and putting them in a little ziplock snack bag. I do the thermos thing and the gogurt thing too (freezing a little bit of the beverage in the bottom of the thermos the night before and then adding more beverage to it in the morning and freezing the Gogurt stick and it will be thawed by lunch).
Freezing the sandwich works great too for keeping it cold…or just using frozen bread. Then it is thawed by lunchtime. Frozen fruit like grapes are always a hit too!

I have done this with my son’s lunch and he actually comes home telling me how the other kids always try to swap lunch with him. The best is that I pay only a quarter of what they pay and I have a happy kid.

We have reusable drink bottles and a sandwich keeper box from container store (holds sandwich/chips/fruit slices!) I LOVE IT!!

I agree with the reusable containers and we also use cloth napkins and cloth sandwich wrap. I can’t do a plastic sandwich container because then there isn’t enough room in the lunch box.

re-useable containers for items for ziplocs are more cost effective. you could buy a big container of yogurt or pudding and put in smaller reuseable containers. i send silverware that they kids bring back too.

Instead of using zip-lock bags, use reusable containers to put food in for lunch. It costs less in the long run because you don’t have to keep buying more zip-lock bags and it helps the environment.
