This tip comes from my reader Renea…
I have a baby with super sensitive skin. I was constantly using burp rags for wipes. They are softer, and I could choose how wet I wanted the wipes to be. However using a whole burp rag seemed like a waste for one diaper change. That’s when I got the idea to cut up my old flannel receiving blankets and make smaller wipes.
You can cut them as big or little as you want. My measurements were not exact. I cut the blanket into thirds, and then cut 3 wipes from each of the thirds. Of course you can measure it out and make them pretty and all the same size J If you are handy with a sewing machine it’s easy to take two pieces of the blanket and make a double thick wipe!
I don’t own a sewing machine, so I don’t have finished edges on the sides I have cut. I have found that Carter’s receiving blankets, and the Just One Year brand fray very little in the wash. They have been washed dozens of times, and I always wash them in an undergarment bag (my front loader eats anything small!).
For wipe solution I have a small spray bottle. I fill it with water then add a few drops of baby lotion, and about a teaspoon of baby wash! I just spray it directly on the wipes when I need it. I store my wipes in an old Huggies wipe container I have saved.

what do you use to store the dirty rags when you are out of the house and need to do a diaper change? or do you put the dirty ones in the huggies wipes container??
RK says
We haven’t tried cloth wipes, but we do cloth diapers, and what we do when out is to keep a plastic grocery bag in the diaper bag for used diapers. (You need this anyway for dirty clothes if there’s a leak.)
If we’re going to be out all day or are travelling, we usually just fall back on disposables and toss.

Good idea but don’t like more laundry. We make baby wipes with all the free paper towels we get with coupons. Cut the towels ( the whole roll at once) in half. put in a rubber maid container fill with solution let them soak. I have the recipie here somewhere. I will look for it if some are interested.

Yes I am interested in your recipe if you are able to find for making baby wipes.

Watch Joann fabrics ads and they often have their snuggle flannel on sale for $2.00 a yard or less. It is great flannel and it is often much better quality than
the store bought receiving blankets and even cheaper. I have a serger and finish off the edges for receiving blankets, burp rags, and wipes. If you don’t have a serger, use a simple zig zag stitch along the edge and then hem them back. The Joann snuggle prints are absolutely adorable… Hint: Thanksgiving weekend is the best time to buy flannel and I have gotten it for as little as $1.00 a yard.

I have done the same thing with my kids old receiving blankets but use them for washing the makeup off my face. I wash them by themselves without soap so there’s no irritants plus they’re very soft. My boys are now 15 and 10 and they are still in decent shape. This comes in very handy now with a hormonal teenager suffering through acne.

This is going to sound odd, but we use baby wipes when we go fishing. This is a great idea for us!! Thanks for the tip!!

Love this idea! With two babies in diapers I will definitely be putting this idea to use! Thank you!
