I’ve told you before how to lower your existing bills (more here), but it’s always inspiring to hear how someone else was able to lower their bills. My friend Sheri was able to lower her insurance bill by $800 a year! That’s a big chunk of change for her fund. Check out her post here.

The insurance thing is no joke. When we took over a house my husband was doing a rent to own situation for a buddy, I had a friend who’s a mortgage broker take a look at the paperwork, since I don’t know anything about owning a home, and knew the loan had changed ownership a couple times. She said she thought the insurance was a bit high. I called USAA and got the premium down from over $2000 (yes, 3 zeros) to under $700 a year.

It definitely pays to call and ask for a lower rate on various things. I recently called our internet provider and asked them how “we” could lower our monthly bill. The lady was very helpful and was able to give me a lower rate for a savings of $17 a month. This will help especially since our electric bill just went up $15 a month. Gotta love the electric company. NOT! (Sorry for the vent but for me the electric company is a giant can of worms. And that’s the nicest thing I can say about them now.) So I’m very interested in how you all do with unplugging things and not using the dryer for a month to see if it really saves on your bill. Please keep us posted. Thanks!
Also, we recently found out that our anti-virus software Norton 360 is good for up to 3 computers. Did you know that? It was news to us. Hubby found a great deal on a netbook and then thought he would have to buy another copy of Norton 360 which runs $50 or more. As he did his research he realized that the Norton 360 we have on our desktop is good for up to 3 computers. So he called their customer service line and they helped him set up Norton to work on the netbook too. And there was no additional charge. So he saved $50+ by doing a little research.

Ok, so I have been searching for lower cost auto insurance (my policy renews on the 26th) and have had no luck all week. But, until I read this post I had not even thought of Geico. I saved $732.00 per year by switching to Geico. I am so very excited…..

I unplug everything in my house that is not in use. Shirts at my house get hung up on hangers then hung on a shower curtain rod(that way I can do this all year long). I have put us on an average monthly bill. I think I am going to be calling Geico today though.

This month we have decided to stop using the dryer. My husband put up a clothes line in our yard and that is where our clothes dry. I do one load of laundry a day and line dry it. Having 2 small children we have lots of laundry and using our dryer not only heats up the house but I have heard takes up 50% of the electric bill. We will see what the difference is at the end of the month. Also, we recently called our phone, internet, cable provider and asked about dropping some services to save money and they gave me $25.00 off a month to keep us. I was thrilled. Add that up and its 300.00 a year!

That idea would really work in Texas since it’s hot here all year round! I’d love to hear what the difference in your bill is because I too have a dryer, but have found no proof that it is 50% of the bill.

We are already running on no trills.. (no home phone, no cable, and no extra fun :( and NOW as of July 1 – I have to find a way to contribute 3% of my income to my manatory Florida retirement – about -$80.00 a month :(
So last month I got power strips for ALL outlets in the house (from goodwill at 4 for $1 ) and we are now turning off the power box each day when we leave the house for more than 1 hr (except the refig). So far my light bill went from $142.00 to $87.. which is great here in Florida :) Of course it sucks to reset the clocks each night and have a hot house for the first hour at home.. but we are doing it. And with the powerstrips we are not “tossing coins” away when we are in the house too :)..I think by turning off the water heater we are saving the most. We do showers, dishwasher and laudry on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday only. Yep.. that is the life of a State Employee :)

I’m so excited about this one! Just this week, my husband and I looked at each other and said a lot of things are just too expensive! Let’s take a look at communications (i.e. internet, cell phones, and home phones) I started making calls and determined that if I turn off one of the “extra” cell phones being used as a flexible home phone, get a new service provider for the cell phones for m husband and myself, add a landline to my internet provider, (getting a bundle package) and sign a 2 year agreement, I can save $220 PERMONTH!!! That is amazing… and we really need to reduce our outgoing. We are thrilled! And we’ve added a home line!!!!

That is amazing! That is $2640 a year!
