When you peel a lemon or an orange, save the peel in a ziploc bag. When you need to clean your microwave, put the peels in a bowl with a cup of water and cook for 6-8 minutes. The peels will soften the food and get rid of odors. You’ll be able to wipe the microwave clean with a wet cloth and very little elbow grease.

I just want to warn everyone of the dangers of boiling water in a microwave. About 2 years ago I was boiling water in a cup and I guess I wasn’t paying attention as to how many times I hit the “30 seconds” button. Anyway, The water exploded and the microwave door blew open, with very hot water flying out for about 2 feet. Thank God I was not standing in front of the microwave at the time! You can google water exploding in microwave and get the full explanation of why this happens.
Just a word of caution. :) Barb

Great advice Barb. My grandmother heated a cup of water in the microwave once, and when she went to take it out, somehow a bubble had formed on the top of the water which then popped all over her arm. Fortunately the water wasn’t TOO hot, but it was hot enough to slightly burn her arm.

I always just put a wet dish rag in the microwave turn on for 1 minute and let it set for roughly 5 to 10 minutes, come back and just wipe down. It losens up the food and the rag is right there. We have always done this when I worked at 7-11 and those get gruddy.

Then put them down the disposal to clean it.

That was my favorite part of spending the night with my grandmother. She’d let me put a lemon in the disposal.
Donna says
Just using water works to, it is the steam that loosens everything up.

That’s what I was wondering. Thanks for confirming! We boil water in the microwave for heating my daughter’s milk, so maybe we should be cleaning it afterwards!

You can also use a splash of vinegar in a bowl of water. Vinegar is uber-cheap and the smell goes away as soon as it dries.
Lauren says
already said that but thanks
