This tip comes from my reader Leigh…
I always save the juice that I drain from canned fruit and either drink it or make flavored ice cubes with it. Peach, pear and pineapple juice ice cubes are great in water, tea, juice and other drinks. This is a great way to make your own flavored water and teas. When the ice cubes melt in your tea or juice drink it won’t taste watered down. I also save the juice that I drain from canned tuna, chicken, etc and pour it over my cat and dog’s dry food to make it taste more like wet food without the wet food cost. I sometimes save the chicken juice (refrigerate or freeze it) and use it like chicken stock or in rice or vegetables instead of water.

Ice cubes! Brilliant! My kids usually drink all the juice out of the can of fruit, but when I am using something in a recipe I can probably do this. We don’t eat enough canned chicken to save the leftover, but this would be a great way to preserve chicken stock as well. So much easier to use in small batches.

I love the ice cube tip! We usually just drink the juice (esp. pineapple!) when we open a can. The kids will agrue over who’s turn it is to drink the juice. Now w/the ice everyone can have some!!!

We make our own chicken broth from the carcass after we eat a rotisserie chicken. I just put it in the crockpot, add water to cover, and let it cook all day on low. The broth is already seasoned, so it’s easy to make soups or add to rice. We do the same with ham bones around the holidays as well. Easy and much more flavorful than what you can buy in the can or box.
I use the drained fruit juice in canned fruit as the cold water when I make Jello. It adds more fruit flavor.
