Shopping at consignments sales can save you some money, especially when it comes to kid’s clothes which they outgrow overnight or ruin. But selling the clothes your kids have outgrown at those same consignment sales is a win-win!
Reader Lynda shared this with us:
To save on my kids clothes, I always consign at local consignment fairs – and then buy their new clothes at the fairs too. It is like re-cycling their clothes. The money I get from consigning always more than covers what I spend buying their new clothes.
If there is a consignment sale in your area that you like to shop at, look up their website by googling the name of the sale. Look up the dates of the sale, dates of registration and requirements for consigning. Planning ahead will give you plenty of time to get your things together and have a profitable sale!
You can also shop the clearance racks at your favorite retailers to save too!

You may want to look into selling on eBay. I used to consign until I realized I make at least DOUBLE by selling the items on eBay (this is AFTER the eBay fees and Paypal fees, which I figure into my S&H fees). I sell most items individually. EBay gives everyone 50 listings per month for free – that means you only pay for the final value fee (9% of total) and a Paypal fee (2.9% of the amount, plus $.30 per transaction). I have been selling regularly on eBay for years and I put at least $100 into my fund each month from sales. Mostly I sell my kids’ clothes, but I’ve also sold old toys, DH’s & my clothes, and even items like haircolor that I have bought on sale with coupons (some that I’ve gotten for free with coupons or rebates, making it a great money-maker).
I also buy a lot of my kids’ clothes on eBay, usually dresses for DD. I can get a very fancy dress brand new for about $6-8 each including shipping. The same dress would run about $40-50 in the mall stores. Clothes like jeans & shirts get bought either on really good clearance or at the local Goodwill, which has a sale every Monday where some items are only $1.29 each. I shop every Monday and only buy what is on sale for that week.
