Have you ever dried clothes on a clothesline?
Reader Stacie shared this tip with us:
We save money during the summer by hang drying our clothing outside. My dad put together a clothes line and we use it to dry everything, especially heavy things like towels! However, if it is a nicer piece of clothing we hang it in the shade or hang dry it inside. We rarely use our dryer and it is awesome and much cheaper!

Unfortunately, I don’t have time to use a clothes line. Dryer is much quicker and effective for my needs! Plus.. it’s energy efficient.. ;)

I love line drying clothes and I do feel a lot better about not paying for the electricity to run the dryer, but even with fabric softener, the fabric, especially towels, end up so crusty and tough. I can live with it but the rest of my family hates it. I make them suck it up though lol.
For those who can’t have a clothesline because of HOA or whatever, you can get a drying rack for around $20 at Walmart. There are some that costs more depending on how sturdy it is and the material it’s made of, but it’s worth the investment.

I wonder if drying them in the dryer for a short period of time before may keep it from getting crusty and tough.

It doesn’t really help.. We have a clothes line in the basement and a metal drying rack purchased at lowes. We could get rid of our dryer tomorrow and I wouldn’t miss it. I couldn’t tell you the last time we used it. My family also isn’t too thrilled about the “cardboard” towels as they call them, but they suck it up as well. It just feels so good to know you’re not using all the electricity!

We do that with everything, even our towels. We just throw them in for about 15 minutes with a dryer sheet and they come out soft. Our dryer is on the fritz so anytime I can get out of putting clothes in the dryer I do it. My dad made mine when we first moved in by saudering(maybe welding?)some heavy duty pipes together taht are 6 feet tall. We sank them in teh ground in some cement. That was 14 years ago and just replacing the lines every couple years I know that it has saved me lots on electricty! In fact used them today when I washed about 10 loads of laundry. (the closthes line holds about 4 loads)
