Reader Jess says that this is her favorite money-saving tip:
When I am looking to buy bread (other than sandwich) I will ask the bakery if the have some marked down because its almost the expiration day and they almost always do. I get roll, french bread or whatever for usually 40 percent marked off and its still fresh. Walmart usually has a whole shelf by our dairy case full of cakes, bread etc marked down because its fresh by date is tomorrow.
This is great if you’re looking for some dinner rolls or such for dinner that night or you have some extra room in the freezer to freeze it for later!
Don’t forget, I’m always looking for your best money saving tip, so please share!

I always check out the mark-down rack at my Wal-Mart for the clearanced bakery goods and toss them into the freezer for later. My kids call them the “fancy bread”

I usually find bagels and English muffins for about .50 at Kroger. If they have a whole bunch its great day in my book.
The discount bread is great for bread pudding or baked French toast. Makes the tasty dishes cheap too! Yay!

My Kroger has a rack in the back of the store containing “Manager’s Special” bakery markdowns. I had been buying frozen French rolls at over $3 a bag (8 rolls or so). They had 6-count bags of bakery French rolls marked down to 59 cents a bag! I froze them, and they actually taste better than the fancy frozen ones. I always check out that rack from now on.

I found 3 loaves of bread clearanced at kmart for $.75 each. They expired the next day so in the freezer they went. LOVE finding clearanced bread deals. We also have a few Sweetheart Bakery Outlet Stores. Even their prices are starting to get higher for bread lately though.
