Update: This attraction is now permanently closed.
The Studio Backlot Tour in Hollywood Studios is a walking and tram tour (more tram than walking though) that features props from popular movies like Pearl Harbor, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Rock. It also takes you through backstage areas of Hollywood Studios where they make the costumes for the characters and shows.
Length of Ride: About 25-30 minutes
Height Requirement: None
Scare Factor: Some of the scenes are very intense. My son was absolutely terrified when he did the tour and still refuses to go on it. There is a scene where a boat gets attacked with bullets and missiles. There is also a scene with fire and water. They are both very intense and are replicas of action scenes from the movies.
Rider Swap: Available.
Weather Procedure: Most of this attraction is outdoors.
Ride Photo: No
Flash Photography: Yes
Queue: Here you will see props from Pearl Harbor as well as videos from the director. It is very fascinating. All 4 lines admit into the attraction, so get in the shortest line if given the choice.
Extra Magic Hours: Not open during morning or evening Magic Hours.
Fastpass: No
When to Ride: When the wait time is less than 15 minutes. During non-peak season, it rarely gets a long line. During peak-season, try to ride before 11 or after 3. Most of the shops close at 5 so make sure you ride before 5.
Our Touring Strategy: We have only rode this once when we noticed the line was only 10 minutes.
Secrets/Tips and Tricks:
- If you want to get wet on the tram, sit on the left side.
- If you arrive early, ask to volunteer to be in the show. If you really want to be in the show, you can always volunteer for the next one if the upcoming show already has volunteers.
- If you have already seen the first show, you can hurry past the stage to try to board the tram that is currently leaving. If you miss it, you can spend that time checking out all the props.
- At the end of the tour, you will walk towards a museum of props based on AFI’s 50 Greatest Villains. If you do not wish to go on the Studio Backlot Tour, you can still see this museum by entering through the exit of the tour located inside the AFI Showcase Shop.
