Did y’all see?
Disney World dropped some discounts. Something I had forgotten used to happen with regularity, pre-rumpus. When was the last time I clicked on the Special Offers button on the Disney page? It’s been forever. Or what feels like forever. If you are planning to visit the House of Mouse from January through April 2021, guess what? Your vacation just got a lot cheaper.
And you might be like, “KB, why does this matter to you? You’re not planning a Spring Break trip. You don’t benefit from these discounts.” But that’s where you’re wrong.
Just two days ago, I was talking with my Travel Agent, the talented, capable, and very patient Elizabeth Mallers. The topic at hand was, of course, the B Family 2021 Trip. Planned for early Fall, there was some talks of us moving the trip to summer 2021. However. We had a hit a snag.
On Monday of this week, my small humans had dentists appointments. Our pediatric dentist is an angel among dentists and the way they do sibling visits is one right after the other. Their rumpus measures include scheduling so that only one family is in the waiting room at a time, masked up. The Glass Slipper, who wears a mask everyday at school, has no problem masking up pre and post her dentist appointment. The Frying Pan, who only occasionally has to wear a mask, had a much more difficult time. Like, she went through about 75 masks. I suspect she may have been using them to craft herself a warm winter sweater. The reminders of “pull your mask up, please,” “masks go over our noses, too,” and “please do not put your mask in your mouth” were coming at such regular internals that at one point Mr. B and I said, in unison, “Please wear your mask the right way.”
After our adorable jinx moment, Mr. B tossed out a casual, “Man, she is going to be a handful at Disney with the mask situation.” We laughed and laughed, and as we laughed, my eyes fell on the Teacup. The Teacup who will be two in a few weeks. The Teacup who will be two years old at her first Disney trip and thus required to wear a mask the whole time. If we couldn’t reason with my five year old, how were we going to keep a mask on the most stubborn, persnickety toddler in all of toddlerdom?
As soon as we were home, I was on the horn to Elizabeth. It started with the mask situation and quickly spiraled to my indecision about dates and my confusion over resorts and my uncertainty about how many park days. Elizabeth listened calmly, as she always does. And gave me some great advice, as she always does. Planning is uncertain right now. Because we are used to planning Disney vacations a year or more in advance. But right now, we don’t know what a year from now will look like. So the best we can do is take it one step at a time. Like our girl Queen Anna, all we can do is the next right thing. so much of my stress has come from trying to plan eight vacations at once: one for each possible variation of the situation. But eventually, even though it feels impossible, the future will stop being so uncertain. There will be one path forward. Even though I don’t know what path that will be, I do know there can only be one. I need to stop doomsday planning for every possible outcome. So I left my reservations in peace. Because who knows what tomorrow will bring?
And guess what tomorrow brought??? DISNEY DISCOUNTS. Disney discounts that I can’t use, sure. But what’s so exciting to me is that they were released at all. Because if Disney can release discounts now, that means they could release discounts for my dates. And if they could release discounts for my dates, it means they could release discounts for your dates, too. Things can change for the better. Who knows? That path, that one path, maybe it will be the best case scenario path. Maybe, in a year, we won’t need to use masks at the parks. Maybe, in a year, FastPass will be back. Maybe, in a year, the Dining Plan will be back. These discounts reminded me that I’m saving for the FUTURE. And it’s a great big beautiful tomorrow.
